Donald Trump Pays Tribute To Ted Turner While Lamenting “Woke” CNN

Published

on

Donald Trump paid tribute to media titan Ted Turner, who died on Wednesday at age 87, while bashing the network he created, CNN.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Ted Turner, one of the Greats of All Time, just died. He founded CNN, sold it, and was personally devastated by the Deal because the new ownership took CNN, his ‘baby,’ and destroyed it. It became woke, and everything that he is not all about. Maybe the new buyers, wonderful people, will be able to bring it back to its former credibility and glory. Regardless, however, one of the Greats of Broadcast History, and a friend of mine. Whenever I needed him, he was there, always willing to fight for a good cause! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Trump’s reference to “new buyers” is to Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent.

Turner sold CNN’s parent, Turner Broadcasting, to Time Warner, in 1995. He stepped down as vice chairman of Time Warner in 2003, amid the company’s ill-fated merger with AOL, and as a director in 2006.

Turner, who had a history of giving to candidates of both parties, endorsed Hillary Clinton over Trump in the 2016 presidential race, writing that she was “on the front line fighting for what is right.”

EXCLUSIVE: Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Ashley Reyes (Walker), and Jamie Neumann (The Deuce) are starring in Quads & The Kicker.

Ranch Productions has started principal photography on the neo-noir thriller written and directed by Heidi James, inspired by the Off-Broadway play Never The Same Rhyme Twice by Andy Rooster Bloch. Production is currently underway in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Set within the shadowy world of female poker grifters and featuring original song, the movie follows a once-loyal sisterhood as shifting alliances—and a triple-con—fracture the bond that once held them together.

Filming is taking place in executive producer Dean Stoecker’s handcrafted cabin and across Northern Arizona. Pic is produced by Michael Downey (The Big Ugly), Dave McVeigh, and Heidi James. Executive producer is Dean Stoecker.

“The luxury of time—to really connect and explore—is something we don’t often allow ourselves anymore,” said James about the rehearsal process. “I wanted to build something that reflects a way of being before everything became immediate.”

“This marks our second film under the Ranch Productions banner,” said Stoecker. “We’re drawn to visceral, unique, hybrid-genre projects like Quads & The Kicker and have an exciting slate to follow.”

Eugene Mirman Debuts Special On YouTube A Month After Car Crash

Published

on

A month after he was hospitalized following a fiery car crash in New Hampshire, Eugene Mirman is back in a joking mood.

On Tuesday, the Bob’s Burgers voice actor announced his first stand-up special in a decade, Here Comes the Whimsy, would debut that night on YouTube, now available to stream entirely on the Pretty Good Friends channel.

Two weeks ago, Mirman appeared in a video with his Bob’s Burgers co-star Kristen Schaal, promoting her and John Roberts’ show The Legend of Crystal Shell. “I’d love to go see it,” he said.

“Well, now that you’re a live, you can,” Schaal quipped, before revealing that Mirman will open for the show on May 12 at Dynasty Typewriter.

The post came after Mirman was hospitalized with serious injuries when he was involved in a car accident, causing the vehicle to catch fire while he was inside.

Days after the accident, Mirman updated his fans that he was “on the mend” and “doing relatively alright, all things considered.”

“Thank you so much for all the well wishes, love and kind messages from friends and strangers,” wrote Mirman on Instagram. “I am extraordinarily thankful to the heroic people that pulled me from the car and to the warm, kind and talented staff at the hospital that cared for me and got me on the mend!”

Mirman is known for voicing musically gifted middle child Gene Belcher on Fox’s Bob’s Burgers since the animated sitcom premiered in 2011. He also played Eugene in Flight of the Conchords during its two- season run on HBO in 2007-’09. His dozens of other credits include Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Apple & Onion, Delocated and a recurring role as Cheryl Tunt’s brother Cecil on Archer.

Box Office Preview: ‘Mortal Kombat II’ to Battle Devil Wears Prada 2

Published

on

Who will be the fairest of them all at a very crowded Mother’s Day box office?

While most tracking services are betting on the violent video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II to prevail and top the North American chart with $40 million or more — one research firm is even suggesting $45 million to $49 million — New Line and parent company Warner Bros. are predicting a far more conservative opening in the $35 million range for a worldwide launch anywhere between $65 million and $80 million.

In 2021, Mortal Kombat was by all accounts a resounding hit on streaming when launching simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max due to the ongoing pandemic and a badly lagging box office, where the martial arts movie debuted to $23 million on its way to topping out at a tepid $42 million domestically and $84.4 million globally.

While the actual number of streaming views was never revealed, a sequel came together relatively quickly, with Simon McQuoid returning to helm from a script by Jeremy Slater and Karl Urban joining the franchise as fan favorite character Johnny Cage, a washed up ’90s action star called to take part in a tournament that will determine the fate of Earthrealm.

New Line and Warners have good reason to play it safe in its estimates, since the Mortal Kombat sequel could find itself in a close race with holdover The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is fast on its way to becoming the biggest female-led film since Warner Bros.’ Barbie in 2023 after kicking off the summer box office last weekend with a domestic debut of $77.2 million domestically and $234 million globally.

Prada 2 has been enjoying brisk weekday business — it certainly didn’t hurt that the Met Gala took place May 4, the Monday following its opening — and should clear the $300 million mark in worldwide ticket sales before Mother’s Day weekend gets underway. By the end of Sunday, May 10, which is Mother’s Day, the 20th Century and Disney sequel should have $450 million or more in the bank as it prepares to cross $500 million.

Both Mortal Kombat and Prada hover in the 77 percent range in regard to their Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score. (THR‘s review isn’t so keen on Mortal Kombat II but concedes it “determinedly caters to its devoted fans, who don’t seem to mind that the word ‘combat’ isn’t really spelled with a k.”

Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic, which is heading into its third weekend, also remains a formidable contender, particularly since kids are the film’s biggest fans and have hence turned Michael into a family pic that could earn another $30 million in North America alone this weekend.

Michael has already grossed north of $400 million at the worldwide box office to rank as one of the top-grossing music biopics of all time, not adjusted for inflation. The big is Bohemian Rhapsody, which sports a global total of $911 million. While Michael should soon overtake the $216 million earned by the Freddie Mercury biopic domestically, it is unlikely to match its worldwide tally.

Speaking of families, Amazon MGM’s critically adored The Sheep Detectives is tracking to open in the $12 million to $15 million range domestically. The comedy-mystery is based on the 2005 bestselling German novel Three Bags Full, and follows a flock of talking sheep who are determined to solve the suspicious death of their beloved shepherd, voiced by Hugh Jackman, who had read them detective novels on a regular basis despite having no idea they could understand him.

Sheep Detectives currently sports a coveted 96 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is produced by Working Title and Three Strange Angels Productions, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller listed among the executive producers.

Lord and Miller, directors of 2026 box office hit Project Hail Mary, aren’t the only A-list filmmakers with new projects on the Mother’s Day menu.

Paramount is opening James Cameron’s new concert documentary, Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), in theaters across the U.S. Tracking has the film opening anywhere from $6 million to $9 million. Cameron pioneered special 3D cameras designed to make moviegoers feel as if they were part of a live experience that he used when filming Eilish.
