Scarlett Johansson to Star in Ari Aster’s Next Film Scapegoat for A24

Published

on

Ari Aster just landed one of the biggest movie stars on the planet to lead his fifth feature. Scarlett Johansson will star in “Scapegoat,” which is set up at A24 and which Aster will write, direct, and produce, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

If you thought there would be any plot details today about a new Aster joint, think again. Everything is under wraps for now, but Deadline, which first reported the news, reports that Johansson was Aster’s first choice for his latest idea.

Aster is producing with his partner Lars Knudsen for their Square Peg banner.

Johansson has a busy shooting schedule that includes the next “Batman” movie opposite Robert Pattinson and an “Exorcist” reboot for Universal. She’s set to be seen in “Paper Tiger” from James Gray at Cannes later this month, and she’s coming off having directed her own debut feature film, “Eleanor the Great.” She also in 2025 starred in “Jurassic World: Dominion” and appeared in Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme.” She’s as busy as they come.

Aster’s last feature “Eddington,” the neo-Western that was also a COVID-era parable, was pretty star-studded as well, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone. That film made $13.7 million for A24 last year at the box office. A24 has released all of Aster’s movies dating back to his debut breakout “Hereditary” in 2018.

Johansson just recently lost the title of the highest-grossing movie star based on box office revenue to Zoe Saldaña after the release of the latest “Avatar” film, but Johansson at $15.4 billion is just another $70 million blockbuster short of catching up. Will an Aster film get her there? “Hereditary” made $90.3 million and “Midsommar” did $48.5 million. He’s moved away from the straight genre horror since then, and that’s made him more polarizing at the box office, but having a movie star of Johansson’s caliber involved never hurts.

Deadline first reported the news.

Published

Shepperton Studios is honoring Maggie Smith.

The UK studio unveiled The Maggie Smith Stage in a private ceremony attended by the late Harry Potter and Downton Abbey actress’s close friends and family members, including her sons Toby Stephens and Christopher Larkin.

Smith had a long association with Shepperton and its sister studio Pinewood, where she filmed the likes of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (1987), which earned her the BAFTA for Best Actress. She also worked at the studios on Othello (1965), Clash of the Titans (1981), The Secret Garden (1993), and Gosford Park (2001).

Known as one of Britain’s most-loved actresses, Smith passed away in 2024 aged 89 following a career that brought her two Oscars, five BAFTAs, four Emmys and a Tony Award.

Her sons Stephens and Larkin said today: “We are deeply touched by this recognition. Our mother would have been honoured to have her own stage at Shepperton, a place she had fond memories of and that means so much to the industry she dearly loved.”

Pinewood Group, which owns Shepperton Studios, added: “Dame Maggie Smith is a national treasure and one of the finest actors of her generation. Her connection to both Shepperton and Pinewood Studios is deeply woven into our history, and we are honoured to recognise her contribution by naming The Maggie Smith Stage.”

Richard E. Grant & Dominic West Set For ‘The Man Who Stole Portugal’

Published

on

Principal photography has begun on The Man Who Stole Portugal, a feature project from director Thomas Napper (Jawbone) that has been described as a “darkly comic period heist” about “one of the most audacious financial frauds of the 20th century.”

The film stars James Nelson Joyce (This City is Ours) as Alves Reis, a self-made outsider with a genius for turning a closed door into an opportunity, the official synopsis reads.

The synopsis continues: “Shut out and underestimated, Reis is determined to give his wife Maria, played by Emily Fairn (The Responder), and their family the life they deserve, and, hustle by hustle, he begins to invent his way upwards. From forged credentials to official contracts, his journey takes him via colonial backwaters all the way to the boardrooms of the Bank of Portugal – until his greatest bluff becomes one of the greatest cons in history.

“The Man Who Stole Portugal follows Reis’ hunger for status into a world of financiers, diplomats, bureaucrats, and opportunists, as he makes the establishment a grand accomplice in its own deception.”

The cast also includes Joel Fry (Bank of Dave) as Jose, Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World) as Karel, Kim Bodnia (F1) as Adolf, with Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me) as Sir William, and Dominic West (Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale) as Carlos.

Napper directs from a script by Richard Galazka, inspired by the true crime book by Murray Teigh Bloom. Michael Elliott (A Long Winter) produces for EMU Films, with Walli Ullah and Jim Mooney as Executive Producers. Terry Smith is the Executive Producer and also finances via Moviedrome.

The production will shoot in the UK, Portugal, and South Africa. Beta Cinema is handling world sales and will launch the project to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes Market.
