Vinicius Jr had ‘preliminary agreement’ to join Barcelona before Real Madrid move – Bartomeu

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has said Vinicius Junior had a “preliminary agreement” to join the club prior to his move to Real Madrid.

In May 2017, Madrid announced an agreement with Flamengo to sign Vinicius Jr, then aged 16, when he turned 18 in July 2018 — the minimum age for an international transfer.

The Brazil international has gone on to score 127 goals across eight seasons in Madrid’s first team and has become widely recognised as one of the world’s star players.

“Vinicius Jr was of interest to us (Barca),” Bartomeu, who was Barcelona president between 2014 and 2020, told ESPN Deportes. “We spoke with his family, with his agents, and there was indeed an initial agreement.”

Bartomeu then added, of how Vinicius Jr ended up instead at Barca’s rivals in the Spanish capital: “Madrid possibly made a better offer than Barca and took Vinicius.”

Bartomeu’s comments come ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico between the two clubs, which will see Barca crowned La Liga champions if they avoid defeat.

Hansi Flick’s side require just one point to maintain an unassailable 11-point lead over second-place Madrid, with just three rounds of matches remaining.

Cameron Norrie: British number one loses in Italian Open to Thiago Agustin Tirante

Published

on

British number one Cameron Norrie exited the Italian Open in the second round with a straight-set defeat by Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante.

The 17th seed lost 6-3 7-5 to Tirante, who is ranked at a career-best 69th in the world.

Norrie, the world number 19, was playing his opening match after a first-round bye. He was immediately at a disadvantage, losing his first service game as he swiftly trailed 3-0 in the first set, which the unseeded Tirante served out in 34 minutes.

The second set was a tighter affair, with both players holding serve until Tirante broke for 6-5, and the 25-year-old then delivered a match-clinching service game to love.

The exit of Norrie, 30, ends British involvement in the singles in Rome, after Katie Boulter lost to Germany’s Eva Lys in the first round of the women’s draw on Wednesday.

Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu and Sonay Kartal are among the British players who are absent from the tournament this year with various injury and illness issues.

Tirante, who is presently Argentina’s seventh highest ranked men’s player, will face either Italy’s 10th seed Flavio Cobolli or France’s Terence Atmane in the third round.
