Louie Barry: From Barcelona to Stockport at Wembley via nine loans
His curling effort from inside the box gave Stockport the lead in their second leg win over Stevenage at Edgeley Park as they progressed 3-0 on aggregate.
“He must have aspirations to play every week in the Championship because he has the ability,” Bristol Rovers boss Steve Evans said on Sky Sports after the game.
“He loves it here [at Stockport] and they love him. I think it’s more consistency in his game [that’s needed].
“I think Louie would accept that’s been a problem for him in recent times but he’s got a big stage next week at Wembley.”
Barry failed to score in either of his Championship loan spells – at Sheffield United earlier this season or at Hull City in the second half of last term.
But perhaps having a chance of playing in the second tier next season among familiar surroundings might be what he needs to make an impact.
However, before that there is a small matter of a play-off final against either Bolton Wanderers or Bradford City next week.
“I’d never been to Wembley before this season and I’ve come back from injury, come back with the lads here and am going to go to Wembley twice – I can’t wait,” Barry told BBC Radio Manchester.
“I feel like whatever happens, we’ve got the quality and we’ve got the confidence in our group that whoever we play we can get over the line,” he added.

FA Cup final & Premier League predictions: Chris Sutton v Blossoms and Songer – & AI
Chris had an extremely good week in the BBC Premier League predictions race – wrapping up not one but TWO weekly wins.
Last weekend, he got six correct results from the 10 games in week 36, including one exact score, for a total of 90 points.
The BBC readers managed five correct results, with no exact scores, for a total of 50 points.
His guest, boxer Fabio Wardley and AI both managed five correct results with on exact score, and ended up on 80 points.
There was one other game played, between Manchester City and Crystal Palace on Wednesday, which had been postponed from week 31 because City were in the Carabao Cup final.
Chris had, provisionally, been given the weekly win for the purposes of the table below – but he still could have lost it, which could have been catastrophic for his title hopes.
Before City versus Palace, he had 70 points, his guests – Crookhaven stars Amari Bacchus & Genesis Lynea – both had 60 points, the BBC readers had 30 points and AI had 20 points.
Things turned out well for Chris, however. He picked up 40 points for an exact score after correctly backing City to win 3-0.
Amari also thought City would win 3-0 and collected 40 points while Genesis, the BBC readers and AI all picked up 10 points after going for the same outcome but a 3-1 scoreline. Those points (or an average of them for the two guests) have been added to their scores.
With two rounds of fixtures to go, Chris is back on top of the table. The guests can no longer catch him, but AI and the BBC readers still can.
Chris currently has nine outright weekly wins, one more than anyone else. They have always been used to determine positions in the predictions table, since the days before AI and the readers could make predictions too, when his guests were his only opponents.

Rousey vs Carano: Ronda Rousey says Gina Carano fight will ‘smash’ pay record for women in combat sports
As she has in the build-up to the fight, Rousey refrained from showing the competitive edge she displayed during her early MMA career and praised Carano.
Carano, 44, was the first woman alongside Cris Cyborg in 2009 to headline a card in a major MMA promotion, but retired shortly after.
“If anyone can steal my happiness, I’d be happy for it to be Gina because she inspired me when I was sitting on the couch one day, and I’ve never been able to give back to her,” said Rousey.
“If she gets the greatest comeback story of all time I’d be happy to be part of it.”
Carano revealed she suffered with her mental health and gained a lot of weight after being fired from The Mandalorian in 2021, where she worked as an actress.
She credited Rousey with helping her recovery.
“I’ve worked so hard. Having Ronda as the goal got me out of bed every morning,” said Carano.
“I’ve pictured the fight, I can’t see it going any other way, having my hand raised. As sick as I was a year and a half ago, I feel this is already a victory.”
Also on the card, former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou takes on Philipe Lins and fan favourite Diaz faces Mike Perry, but they have mostly taken a backseat to Rousey and Carano in fight week.
With organisers aiming to set a new record for the most watched MMA event of all time, it remains to be seen if the Rousey-fronted venture can indeed step out of the UFC’s shadow.
Rousey first approached the UFC to stage her comeback, but couldn’t agree terms with White and the hierarchy.
“When I first sat down in that [UFC] office and I was lactating [after giving birth], [they] didn’t think I was to be taken seriously,” she said.
“I think they’re regretting not making it happen now.”

How Welcome to Wrexham transformed a Welsh club into a global hit
When Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac completed their takeover of Wrexham, the idea that a documentary would follow felt almost inevitable.
The pair arrived with backgrounds in storytelling – Reynolds with an established reputation for marketing as much as acting, and Mac having spoken openly about how the Netflix documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die inspired his want to buy Wrexham.
Humphrey Ker, alongside the owners, is an executive producer on the series. He is also a director at the club, and was the man who introduced Mac to football.
“We always hoped that telling an authentic story about something as unique and yet universal as a football club would resonate… But I don’t think any of us expected the level of interest” says Ker.
The involvement of Reynolds and Mac may explain the initial attention, but the reason audiences stay is different.
“It is the authenticity that keeps people coming back. People like Wayne Jones [owner of the Turf pub], Kerry Evans [the club’s disability liaison officer], and Phil Parkinson [the manager] and staff are the real stars” says Ker.
That emphasis on community runs throughout. Rather than focusing solely on performance or tightly controlled narratives, it leans into the unpredictability of football and the lived experience of those around it.
“I think it’s definitely the reason it works,” adds Ker.
“Lots of sports docs present a polished and anodyne version of the ‘product’… I think that veracity is what got people hooked.”
For viewers, that authenticity translates into something more immersive.
The scale of that connection has even become the subject of academic research.
Professor Jan Boehmer from the University of Michigan is the co-author of the study ‘Did Deadpool Save a City? The Socio-Economic Impact of Welcome to Wrexham’.
He believes the series allows audiences to feel personally connected to the town itself.
“Viewers quickly form a strong bond,” explains Boehmer.
“They might feel as if they knew the people of Wrexham personally, making them part of the community… it doesn’t feel like marketing. It feels like a good story.”
That dynamic has helped the series travel beyond traditional football audiences.
While results still provide narrative tension, the emotional core lies within the social presence of the club.
The series has chartered the on-field successes of consecutive promotions for the men’s side, but setbacks have played a role in sustaining interest.
“Adversity makes for more interesting television,” explains Ker – pointing to the club’s failure to secure promotion in the first season as a key driver for returning viewers.
“People are very proud to see the club and the city represented this way… I’m honestly astonished by the lack of naysaying.”
