Spider-Man, The Beatles, Jumanji: Sony Boss Teases Future Movies

Published

on

Sony Pictures is flying high after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, swung into the record books with its spectacular opening weekend at the box office.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton‘s film launched to $360 million domestically, leaping past 2019’s Avengers: Endgame for the biggest North American debut ever. Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo also star in Brand New Day, which focuses on the title Marvel superhero’s lonely life as he sets out to stop an invisible new foe.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman admits that there have yet to be significant talks about Holland returning as Spider-Man for a fifth film: “No, not in any concrete sense — only aspirational.” In light of Holland having told THR at the Brand New Day premiere that he would be open to reprising his role, Rothman says, “I can tell you when I heard that Tom said that, I jumped for joy. All I will say is that hope springs eternal. I really hope so.”

He also quips, “All the geniuses who said that theatrical movies were dead, they’re not necessarily right. Actually, the theatrical marketplace is booming right now, and I’m excited about it. So I’m very optimistic.”

The exec sees the nearly five-year gap since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home — which marked the previous feature to star Holland as the web-slinger — as having created a sense of scarcity that built excitement for Brand New Day. Rothman also recalls the filmmaking team feeling a sense of uncertainty at first about how to follow No Way Home, which created buzz with the return of past Peter Parkers in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield before collecting a global total of $1.9 billion.

“[Initially,] the problem for a while was, ‘How do you top that?’” he says. “What do we do next when we just put in all our Spider-Men? The strategic decision was — rather than trying what we all thought would be perhaps an empty effort of going quote, unquote bigger — we just went deeper. That was a very conscious choice to focus on how we could make the audience feel. We were fortunate enough to have a director who was able to balance emotion and spectacle.”

Sony’s upcoming slate for the next few months includes Insidious: Out of the Further, Resident Evil and the Social Network follow-up The Social Reckoning. The studio closes out the year with Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart reprising their roles for Jumanji: Open World, hitting theaters on Christmas.

“It’s hilarious,” Rothman gushes about Jake Kasdan’s movie that will close out the Jumanji trilogy. “It’s the best of the three. It’s very smart because it brings them to the real world, which people want to see, and then it has new twists on the gag.”

In the meantime, Rothman travels this week to the London set of director Sam Mendes‘ forthcoming four-film project about The Beatles that will hit theaters in April 2028. Production continues on the movies that star Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

“We’re probably a little more than halfway through shooting, and it’s remarkable,” he says. “It is an unprecedented undertaking. I feel about it what I feel about the Spider-Man movie, which is, everybody knows the broadest outlines of the Beatles story, but [with] Sam and the depth of character, in addition to the most incredible music ever, it’s a really emotional story. So I’m excited about it, but it’s a big undertaking. It’s a year of shooting and then a year of post.”

UFC, WWE Parent TKO Sees Solid Q2, Raises Full-Year Guidance

Published

on

TKO Group, the home of UFC and WWE, saw revenue jump 18% to $1.5 billion for the three months ended in June, beating Wall Street forecasts.

The stock, which has been taking its knocks this year, jumped in late trading after the earnings report, which included higher 2026 forecasts for full year revenue and adjusted ebidta, key metrics for investors.

“Despite a challenging global environment, TKO delivered solid results in Q2, with strong momentum heading into the back half of the year,” said executive chair and CEO Ariel Emanuel. “Premium live content and experiences are heating up in an increasingly AI-driven world, and our businesses are well positioned to fully capitalize on societal secular tailwinds.”

At UFC, revenue rose by $120 million to $536 million. Higher UFC media rights fees reflected the impact of a distribution agreement with Paramount that began in January. The league also saw new partners and an increase in fees from renewals vs the year before largely driven by the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House in June. Ticket sales fell, since none were sold for the high-profile event, and there was one less numbered event in the quarter from the year earlier.

At WWE, revenue rose by $64.7 million to $621 million.

TKO’s IMG segment saw sales up by $48 million to $354.7 million.

TKO net income grew $31 million to $304 million on higher revenue partly offset by increased expense, including $98 million of legal fees and settlement costs associated with stockholder litigation related to WWE.

The company’s adjusted ebitda rose 23% to $649.9 million. Free cash flow of $349.6 million fell by $25.3 million

TKO shares closed up 1.2% ahead of earnings and are about 2% after, at $187.

“From UFC Freedom 250 to the FIFA World Cup, TKO continues to deliver on the biggest stages and this quarter reinforced our 2026 execution story,” said TKO president and COO Mark Shapiro, saying its move to raise full-year guidance reflects “both our performance to date and our confidence in TKO’s multi-year trajectory,”

“Our global fan base is expanding, and we are capitalizing on the commercial promise across ticketing, premium hospitality, marketing partnerships, and financial incentive packages. The demand in the experience economy is undeniable and positions us well for multi-year growth, margin expansion, and overall value creation.”

Execs are hosting a call with analysts at 5 pm ET.

Jill Blankenship Writing Castle Action Movie For Sony, Chris Bremner

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures has inked a deal for Jill Blankenship to pen Castle, a medieval action film stemming from an original idea from Chris Bremner‘s Unknown Quantity.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. Bremner will produce alongside his partner Jeff Arkuss, who we’re told was instrumental in the deal.

A TV showrunner jumping into film for the first time, Blankenship with Castle becomes the rare female scribe invited to tackle muscular action within the studio space. Alongside Ava DuVernay, she previously co-created superhero drama Naomi for The CW, also serving as showrunner.

Blankenship has developed multiple times in television, including shows for Amazon and Netflix. She started her career on TNT’s The Last Ship, and in the Berlanti camp, before going on to work on Sweet Tooth for Netflix and Daredevil: Born Again for Marvel/Disney+. She also has the Black List thriller Trapped set up with Sarah Bremner and Noah Oppenheim’s Prologue Entertainment and is repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone, and attorneys Abel Lezcano and Chris Namba.

After writing Sony’s recent hit Bad Boys films, Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Bremner’s Unknown Quantity was signed to a writing and producing deal with the studio. As a producer, Bremner has several projects set up at Sony Pictures, including Permission by Dan Roe and You Up by Gabe Delahaye. Bremner and Unknown Quantity are repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone, and attorneys Greg Slewett and Deb Lintz.
