Ravens’ Calais Campbell says past few months have been ‘pretty tough’: ‘Continue praying’
Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Calais Campbell said the past couple of months have been “pretty tough” for him and his family, but that they’re “working through” the death of his mother.
“We appreciate all the love and support and prayers that have come from all over the NFL community (and) all the fanbases,” Campbell said. “Continue praying for us because we need it.”
Campbell spoke to reporters at the Ravens’ facility for the first time since his brother, Ciarre Campbell, was charged with murder in connection with the death of their mother, Nateal Campbell. Per multiple reports, police found Nateal, 71, dead during a welfare check, and authorities found Ciarre Campbell in possession of a knife. Ciarre was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm or knife and murder.
Campbell, who turns 40 in September, is entering his 19th NFL season, including nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ravens, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. He feels “strongly” that this upcoming season will be his last. When asked Tuesday whether he’d consider skipping this season due to the tragedy, he cited his love for being on the field.
“I love the game of football a lot. It’s a place (that) brings me joy,” Campbell said. “The training was adjusted a little bit; it was a little harder to train. … I work really hard (and) I feel really good where I’m at. Practices have been going well. I really like where I’m at right now; the coaches did a really good job of letting me ease in and get myself where I need to be.”
“Whatever he needs, we’re there for him,” Ravens defensive line coach Lou Esposito said.
Campbell agreed to a one-year, $5.5 million deal in the spring to return to the Ravens. He’s coming off a season in which he had 6.5 sacks, 43 tackles, two pass deflections and 16 quarterback hits with the Cardinals. He ranks 34th in NFL history with 117 career sacks and is just five games away from surpassing Jim Marshall for the most games played by a defensive lineman.
“September can’t come soon enough,” Campbell added.

US Open 2026: Venus Williams, 46, given singles wildcard along with Sloane Stephens and Stan Wawrinka
Venus has fared better in doubles in recent years, reaching the quarter-finals in New York last year alongside Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
She has not won a singles match at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2021, where she reached the second round.
However, the Williams sisters still draw huge crowds together or separately, with stands packed out in Cincinnati for their recent return.
Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, played what was expected to be the last tournament of her career in New York in 2022.
However, she made her return first in doubles at Queen’s in June before being given the final Wimbledon women’s singles wildcard.
Venus won her first US Open singles title in 2000, two months after earning her maiden major at Wimbledon.
She beat Serena in the final a year later to defend her title – the first of nine major showpieces the sister would contest.
Venus became the oldest US Open singles player in 44 years when she played at the tournament last year.
She lost in three sets to ninth seed Karolina Muchova and gave an emotional news conference afterwards, saying it was “nice to be free”.
In 2011, Williams was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an incurable autoimmune disease with symptoms including pain, numbness and fatigue.
She spoke in 2025 about the impact of painful fibroids – abnormal growths that develop in the uterus – on her daily life.
In the men’s draw, France’s Gael Monfils has been awarded a wildcard in the final Grand Slam of his career.
The 39-year-old, who reached the New York semi-finals in 2016, will retire at the end of the season.
There is also one remaining wildcard for the men’s singles, which could go to 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka.
The Swiss is also calling time on his career at the end of the year.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has signed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, returning to Spanish football for the first time since 2019 when he played for Atletico Madrid.
Rodri, 30, leaves City after seven seasons at the club, having made 298 appearances and won 12 major honours, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the Champions League in 2023.
His final two seasons at the club were disrupted by injury but he returned to his best form for this summer’s World Cup, being named player of the tournament as Spain lifted the trophy for the second time.
