NFL: San Francisco 49ers & Minnesota Vikings go 5-0
San Francisco beat Super Bowl champions Seattle 32-29 in a typically brutal contest between divisional rivals, with the Niners having defensive star Dre Greenlaw ejected early on for a headbutt on Ernest Jones, who was not wearing a helmet, on the sidelines.
Both defences are elite and forced a season-high seven turnovers in the game, with the 49ers in particular taking advantage by scoring three touchdowns from theirs. The 21 points off turnovers was the most Seattle have allowed in a decade.
Brock Purdy eventually got San Francisco over the line thanks to new wide receiver Mike Evans, who had 113 yards receiving and a touchdown, taking some great catches late on.
The only team to have a top-five scoring offence and defence, the 49ers again have injury problems this season, but if Evans stays fit he could be the missing piece in the puzzle.
San Francisco are now 5-0 for the third time under head coach Kyle Shanahan. They have made the NFC Championship on all four previous occasions and, if they keep finding ways to win, they have every chance again.
The Minnesota Vikings are also 5-0 after another defensive masterclass from Brian Flores’ unit in their 23-13 win at the slumping New Orleans Saints.
With wins over the Saints (1-4), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-4) and Miami Dolphins (0-5), we will know more about the Vikings after their bye, but allowing only 13 points a game will always give you a chance.

Wuhan Open: GB’s Sonay Kartal beats Anhelina Kalinina, but Zheng Qinwen withdraws
Sonay Kartal continued her impressive form since returning from injury by beating Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets to reach round two of the Wuhan Open.
The British number five reached the third round at the Beijing Open earlier this month in her first WTA tournament for six months, having been sidelined with a stress fracture in her back.
The 24-year-old followed that up by defeating Ukraine’s Kalinina 7-5 6-3 in an hour and 31 minutes.
World number 170 Kartal will face Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic in her next match.
Kartal returned to action last month for Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup team event, where she narrowly lost to Czech Marie Bouzkova, who sat 26th in the world rankings.
Wins over Spain’s Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Wang Xinyu followed for Kartal in Beijing, before she lost to Armenia’s Alina Charaeva.
Against world number 48 Kalinina, Kartal served four aces and won 23 of 30 points when landing her first serve.
She sealed her spot in the last-32 stage at the third time of asking after Kalanina saved two match points.
Zheng Qinwen withdrew from her home tournament in Wuhan after becoming the first Chinese player to win the China Open.
In a statement, Zheng said she would not be competing because her “body is feeling very fatigued” after “an intense run of matches”.
Zheng underwent elbow surgery last year and had struggled with form and fitness over the past 12 months, before a recent upturn led to her triumph in Beijing.

Jude Bellingham celebrations, Man Utd representation and the greatest NFL London game climax in history | NFL News
Arms out-stretched, frenzied teammates in tow, Tottenham in shock, the NFL in awe, Roger Goodell (most likely) smirking at the sight of more international iconicity.
Cam Little had conjured one of the greatest moments in NFL London games history, his spine-tingling icer prompting a nod to his British stage as the Jacksonville Jaguars kicker imitated Jude Bellingham’s famed celebration.
Just two weeks earlier the NFL had celebrated its Rio de Janeiro debut with a late miracle by way of Tyler Loop’s game-winning field goal to lift the Baltimore Ravens past the Dallas Cowboys with one second left. On that occasion he celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s SIU, there having been something fitting about a kick deciding things at Brazil’s Pele, Zico and Ronaldo-graced Maracana.
It was London’s turn. Tottenham’s turn. Jacksonville’s turn. Cam Little’s turn.
Little converted a 57-yard field goal with one second left to clinch a stunning 19-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, who had taken the lead with eight seconds left on the clock thanks to Jake Elliott’s 48-yard kick.
“One of the craziest games, maybe the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of, and I’ve been in some pretty wild ones,” said Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. “Just how cool is this sport? The game’s never over.”
It was over. It had to be over. An Eagles-dominated Tottenham Hotspur Stadium believed it was over. A poor coaching call not to take the touchback and some Ameer Abdullah magic had other plans, the latter producing a 53-yard kick return to tee up Little’s big moment.
He later joked it was the unofficial winner for his beloved Manchester United, whose shirt he wore to his post-game press conference, after they squandered Saturday’s lead over Spurs. Having grown up accustomed to both codes of football, Sunday’s climax would prove that little bit sweeter as he described it as the greatest moment in his career.
“A hundred per cent,” said Little. “A hundred per cent. Like the record was cool and all, but it still gives me goosebumps because I don’t think you guys realise I wake up every Saturday morning watching the Premier League, every Saturday, and then to play soccer from ages five to 16 – I didn’t touch a football until I was almost 17. So my whole life was soccer up to that point.
“So to do it in this stadium is like I’ve achieved my goal of playing professional soccer even though I’m playing pro football. It’s so cool. It’s my first in my entire career, excluding overtime obviously, but it’s the first walk off game winner I’ve hit in my entire career, where the clock has hit zero and we won the game.”
It was a spectacle that bean in chaos and ended in chaos. Bryan Thomas Jr and Jeremiah Trotter were ejected for a brawl during a 90-yard opening kickoff return touchdown that was eventually nullified by offsetting penalties. A deafening Eagles crowd (at what was technically a Jags home game) was then the case of a false start and two delay of game penalties in the space of six plays inside the 10-yard line to prompt a seethe-fuelled ball spike from Lawrence. Parker Washington produced one of the catches of the season with a phenomenal one-handed 27-yard touchdown for a 16-14 lead, after which Littler missed the extra point.
And of course, there was the eight seconds of bedlam.
Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata described it was a “week from hell”, Sunday’s defeat following the shock retirement of stalwart offensive tackle Lane Johnson and the trade departure of center Cam Jurgens. For Liam Coen’s Jags it was dreamland for a team that has now run three in a row, this one coming in the face of a hostility rarely witnessed at an NFL London game.
One second. One kick to win it all. One Cam Little, there’s only one Cam Little (if we’re sticking to the football theme).
What we learned
- The uncomfortable conversations are coming for the Tennessee Titans and Cam Ward. That’s if they haven’t already started. Head coach Robert Saleh was asked about the prospect of benching his quarterback after Sunday’s 26-3 loss to the Houston Texans, albeit downplaying that idea in response. But the ground is shaking beneath Ward, who isn’t exactly blessed with a clear stage for success in Tennessee, while also falling short of the needle-moving influence you might expect from a No 1 pick quarterback. He finished 23 of 36 passing for 170 yards, while being sacked four times and throwing an interception. With no real threat in the running game, teams are having a field day challenging him to beat them.
- Mike Evans is still doing it at an elite level at the age of 33. Brock Purdy may have never had a more reliable pair of hands at the receiver position than that of Evans since taking over at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers a few years back. Evans had seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown as San Francisco downed the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 32-29, his first 100-yard game since signing with the Niners in the offseason.
- Parker Washington deserves more respect. It’s not uncommon for a sixth-round wide receiver to stray from conversations centred around the elite, but whether he is or isn’t part of that group, the Jaguars wideout has become indispensable for Trevor Lawrence. He had six catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s miracle win over the Eagles, including his one-handed diving grab in the end zone to stun the Philly crowd. He is dynamic with the ball in hand, a crisp route runner and has automatic hands. You can just tell he is a dream teammate for Lawrence.
Overreaction or reality?
Brian Flores is currently the best non-head coach coach in the NFL. Unfortunately for the Minnesota Vikings, you suspect his days as a non-head coach are edging closer to an end, though you also wonder if he is merely enjoying the freedom of full defensive rein on his own reign of terror. Flores tormented New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough in Sunday’s 23-13 win, blitzing him on 90 per cent of dropbacks in the first half and just 40 per cent in the second half while limiting him to 16 passes for 96 yards and no touchdowns. His Vikings
Winners & Losers
Winners:
Jaylen Warren: Have a day, Jaylen Warren. The Steelers running back recorded 15 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown alongside a team-high six catches for 87 yards and a score as Pittsburgh beat the Indianapolis Colts 34-22 on a day that saw Aaron Rodgers throw three touchdowns in his cleanest game of the year.
Will Anderson Jr: The Texans pass rusher collected three more sacks on Sunday to continue his Defensive Player of the Year campaign as his side dominated the Tennessee Titans 26-3. He has become one of the unequivocal premier players in his position in football, and is increasingly aware of his ability to takeover games.
Losers:
Ben Johnson: The Chicago Bears head coach remains one of the true geniuses in football, redefining modern offense in some ways. But when you talk as openly about your hate for an opponent, you are falling into ‘loser ‘ territory should you fall to them. His Bears were on the wrong side of a 31-7 defeat to their fierce rival Green Bay Packers, during which Jordan Love stepped up with his most commanding performance of the season.
The Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh’s side are in turmoil. The running joke this past offseason had been the severity of their tough schedule, and as much is proving a frightening reality. They fell to 0-5 on Sunday after a 23-17 loss to the Denver Broncos, marking their worst start to a season in 23 years. What’s more, Justin Herbert has thrown a second-most six interceptions and is ranked bottom in quarterback rating among qualifying players. Next up: Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Player of the Weekend – Drake Maye, QB, New England Patriots
Drake Maye has shaken off his early season struggles and is beginning to look like something closer to the MVP contender that led the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl last season. He put in his most accomplished performance of the campaign on Sunday as he went 26 of 34 passing for 374 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 25 yards and a score in New England’s 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Game of the Weekend
Drama in London found its way to the West Coast later in the day as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 in an epic after Eddy Pineiro’s late field goal.
An action-packed game featured a season-high seven turnovers, while Brock Purdy threw two touchdowns to Evans and Brandin Cooks. 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was also ejected for a head-butt on Ernest Jones, who was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Two outstanding teams and legitimate contenders going toe-to-toe, the Niners taking it to improve to 5-0 on the season as they continue their Super Bowl charge. The hearts of San Francisco fans were in their mouths when Jaxon Smith-Njigba broke free on third down late in the fourth quarter, only for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year to be guilty of a surprise drop.
