Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar Company Names Head Production, Development

Published

on

Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar, the filmmakers behind features like Sing Sing and Train Dreams, have named Giulia Caruso as the head of production and development at their Ethos production banner.

Ethos, which has a pact with Netflix, is building a slate from emerging filmmakers that come out of top film festivals, film schools and labs. Ethos will use a financing and production model that Bentley and Kwedar used on their films Jockey and the Oscar nominated Sing Sing, where above and below-the-line talent are paid the same wage and shares in equity in the film.

Netflix will fund the development and production of Ethos’ films and release them.

Caruso, a graduate of CalArts, is a veteran indie producer with credits that include Kogonada’s Columbus and Andrew Ahn‘s Spa Night, the latter of which earned her an Independent Spirit Award. Previously, she served as the director of Catalyst and Industry at the Sundance Institute, the program that serves as the Institute’s film financing arm, pairing filmmakers with potential investors.

“When I first met Clint and Greg, I was struck by the clarity of their vision for Ethos, as well as their renowned kindness and care that resonates across everything they do,“ says Caruso. “Joining them at Ethos feels like the perfect next step for me as I’m able to build upon my recent work at the Sundance Institute, where I supported emerging artists and piloted field-facing interventions. I look forward to bringing that same spirit to this new role as we implement their vision for the Ethos model, support new voices and make bold movies.”

Bentley and Kwedar added: “We’re beyond excited to work with Giulia. After an extensive search, we were struck by her passion for supporting filmmakers as well as for finding better ways to operate in our industry. Giulia’s experience both as producer and as the visionary leader of Sundance Institute’s Catalyst program have given her a unique balance of talents to help curate and nurture a slate of films that defy expectations and bring new and unique stories to the world. We can’t wait for her to lead Ethos as we all endeavor to make films that center the community of artists creating them at every step of the process.”

In addition to Bentley and Kwedar, Caruso also joins Rachel Bentley, who leads Ethos‘ business affairs and operations. Bentley and Kwedar are currently in post on their new film for Netflix, Saturn Return, which is directed by Kwedar and stars Charles Melton, Rachel Brosnahan and Will Poulter.

Watch Narnia Magician’s Nephew Trailer; Greta Gerwig on Making Movie

Published

on

In keeping with what will be their largest theatrical release in history, Netflix debuted the first trailer for Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in the IMAX theater atop the AMC Lincoln Square on New York’s Upper West Side.

The preview begins with David McKenna’s Digorey Kirke wondering about his “mad” uncle Andrew, played by Daniel Craig, whom his mother says is a “magician.”

Soon, Digorey and the other children learn from Andrew that magic is real and, with the help of a magical ring, they are transported to the surreal, magical land of Narnia, complete with talking animals and a flying horse, which the children ride in a scene that Gerwig said was her favorite to film.

The trailer is soundtracked to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” an impressive sync considering that the band has historically been reluctant to license their music for movies and TV shows.

Gerwig explained that she showed the film to singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page and they were so moved that they allowed her to use their iconic song.

“They saw the heart of the film,” Gerwig shared, adding that the musicians understood her love for C.S. Lewis.

Seeing the trailer with an audience, all wearing light-up rings that synced up with big moments in the preview, was an emotional experience for Gerwig, who said she was “tearing up” after the trailer debuted, as she put her hand over her mouth.

The event featured tables with water bottles, popcorn (in Narnia-branded cartons) and movie candy as well as coffee (befitting the early morning timing) and passed mini pancakes. It was attended by select members of the press and influencers, who watched as Gerwig spoke with moderator Stephen Colbert about making the movie, a process that involved a lot of faith and began with a focus on the big screen.

Gerwig said she only knows how to make movies for theaters, explaining how she begins by imagining watching the film in the theater, recalling how she told Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos that that was part of her process.

“Make the movie for the biggest screen you can imagine,” Gerwig said Sarandos told her.

An earlier conversation between Gerwig and Sarandos was key to her landing the gig writing and directing the film.

Gerwig recalled how she was introduced to Netflix when now-husband Noah Baumbach made Marriage Story for the streamer. After learned that Netflix had acquired the rights to the Narnia books — some of her favorites from childhood and which shaped who she became — she “made a beeline” for Sarandos at a cocktail party.

She shared her excitement about Netflix making movies based on the Narnia books and began talking about her vision for the project, that The Magician’s Nephew should be the first film. Roughly 20 minutes later, Gerwig recalled, Sarandos asked if she wanted to write the film.

Gerwig landed the gig before she’d made her box-office smash Barbie, so she praised the streamer for taking a chance on her after she’d only made Lady Bird and Little Women.

Beyond imagining the theatrical experience, Gerwig talked about the challenges of telling an intimate story involving, as Colbert put it, “lonely children.”

“If it’s in the heart, it can be huge and small and both can be true,” she said.

More to come.

Quentin Tarantino Set for AFI Fest Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Event

Published

on

Quentin Tarantino is heading back to Hollywood.

The iconic auteur is confirmed for a special event as part of AFI Fest that will see Tarantino sit for a conversation following a screening of his 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. It’s set to take place Friday, Oct. 23 at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre, the same landmark location that hosted the world premiere of his Sony film in July 2019.

The timing is notable. The chat comes ahead of the Nov. 25 bow of Netflix’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a David Fincher-directed film that sees Pitt reprising his role from Tarantino’s film so it’s likely he could address that new addition to the universe. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, Once Upon a Time focused on TV star Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt) as they navigate a changing Hollywood landscape.

“As the world awaits The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, AFI is proud to celebrate where it all began,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI president and CEO. “And to do so with one of the greatest storytellers of our generation is a gift to all who love the movies.”

Tarantino will pen and release a novel, The Adventures of Cliff Booth (Harper), this December.

There’s other news in Tarantino’s life. It was just announced that his West End debut as a playwright has a formal date: The Popinjay Cavalier, from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, will open at the Phoenix Theatre on Mar. 18, 2027, with previews from Feb. 23 and booking until June 13. The play will star Sacha Baron Cohen.

Passes to AFI Fest are now available for purchase, with individual tickets available Oct. 3. The full lineup can be found here.
