CJ ENM has unveiled a fresh glimpse at its upcoming psychological thriller “Paradise Lost”, and the new stills are drenched in heartbreak. The film stars Bae Hyeon Seong and Kim Hyun Joo in the roles of a long-separated mother and son, and it lands in theaters on October 21.
“Paradise Lost” centers on Sun Woo (Bae Hyeon Seong), a son who was presumed dead after vanishing nine years ago. When he finally returns home, his mother So Young (Kim Hyun Joo) — who has spent nearly a decade grieving and yearning for him — finds herself unsettled by the “new” Sun Woo. The reunion she dreamed about curdles into an uneasy cohabitation, as suspicion and sorrow collide under one roof.
Before and after: two sides of a mother’s grief
The newly released stills draw a sharp contrast between So Young’s life before and after her son’s disappearance. In one photograph, she cheerfully waves goodbye as the young Sun Woo boards a bus — a snapshot of the ordinary, warm life they shared before tragedy struck.
In the later stills, the warmth is gone. So Young is shown turning to a virtual version of her son, conjured through artificial intelligence, for comfort. The digital Sun Woo never ages, and the image is a devastating visual metaphor: So Young’s own life has stayed frozen in time since the day he disappeared.
A reunion wrapped in suspicion
Other stills show So Young wrestling with complicated, conflicting emotions. Her guarded expressions hint at a storm of inner turmoil — and raise the film’s central question: what difficult truth will she be forced to confront now that her son is home?
Sun Woo, meanwhile, cuts a chilling figure. Shrouded in darkness, his cold, unreadable expression refuses to tell the viewer how he spent those nine missing years — or whether he is truly the same person who vanished a decade ago.
