Keri Russell and Allison Janney just reminded everyone why The Diplomat is appointment television. Netflix’s political thriller is back with its fourth season — all episodes streaming now — and early reviews say it is the best the series has ever been, driven by powerhouse performances and dialogue sharp enough to cut glass.

One-on-One Conversations, World-Scale Stakes
Season 4 doubles down on what made the show a hit in the first place: intense, claustrophobic conversations where the fate of the world hangs on every word. Presidents and vice presidents, prime ministers and ambassadors, chiefs of staff and even domestic staff all engage in rich, dramatic exchanges loaded with double, triple and sometimes quadruple meanings. Tight close-ups and carefully constructed language keep the tension simmering from the first scene to the last.
The season follows American Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) as she continues to walk a tightrope — managing a boiling international conflict while her marriage to husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) hangs in the balance. It is a crackling, pulpy thriller with superb writing, gorgeous cinematography and acting that critics are calling top-tier.
The Apocalypse Weapon Plot Gets Personal
Without spoiling too much, the new season picks up the fraught storylines of Season 3 and brings them to a furious boil. In the aftermath of the revelation that President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) colluded with Hal — now promoted to vice president — to steal an “apocalypse weapon” from a Russian submarine, Kate launches into a campaign of dealmaking and double-crossing to regain control of the situation.
Just when you think the conspiracy will be the season’s central engine, the premiere throws a harrowing twist: an assassination attempt on the president. The scene is staged with chilling realism — no music, no building tension, just two quick pops and a shirt soaked with blood. It is The Diplomat at its best: presenting the extraordinary as subtle and restrained while never letting you forget the global stakes.
With the stakes this high and Russell and Janney at the top of their game, Season 4 is being hailed as the best political thriller on TV right now. If you haven’t caught up, there is no better time to start.
