Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Is Getting a Viral Fan-Made PS1-Style Game — and It Looks Incredible

Resident Evil fan-made PS1-style game

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is being turned into a fan-made PlayStation 1-style survival horror game — and the early footage, complete with classic fixed camera angles and low-poly graphics, has the internet absolutely losing it.

The project, cheekily titled Resident Evil: The Movie: The Game, is being built by indie developer Julian Zamora, who posts as chicanogoth on Instagram. Built in the Godot engine, the fan game recreates one of the film’s early scenes: Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, takes shelter in a remote barn during a snowstorm before being hunted down by an infected dog — chased across the screen with the camera snapping between the set angles that defined the original PlayStation games.

An Adaptation of an Adaptation

The layering here is delightful. Cregger’s film — which follows Bryan, a medical courier fighting through an outbreak to deliver a package to Raccoon City General Hospital — was itself praised as an adaptation not of a Resident Evil story, but of the experience of playing one. Now Zamora is de-adapting it back into a game. A modder already added Bryan as a PS1-style skin to Resident Evil 2 shortly after the film’s September 18 release, but this project aims much higher: a full playable throwback.

Early, Ambitious, and Probably Doomed

Zamora has been candid that it’s early days — Bryan currently sports the face of an old Chris Redfield model, and the developer admits they still haven’t cracked the pre-rendered flat environments of the PS1 era, so the look leans more toward Code Veronica than the original trilogy. Recent updates showed off death and injury animations, plus teases of a cinematic opening sequence around a police cruiser crash.

Whether Sony or Capcom lets it live is another question. Fan projects like this usually earn legal attention if they get too big. But for now, it’s pure joy — a love letter to the franchise’s fixed-camera heyday from a fan who clearly adored Cregger’s film.
