The ogre is back, and he wants your graphics card. Fans are in disbelief after the Steam page for Shrek 2 Remastered revealed surprisingly hefty PC requirements for the makeover of a 2004 classic — minimum specs call for a GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 3060 Ti, while the recommended experience demands an RTX 4070 or RTX 5070.

12-16GB of VRAM for Shrek’s Green Skin
Originally released in 2004, the remaster promises better textures, an enhanced UI, and 4K resolution — and, apparently, a beefy PC to match. You will need 12-16GB of VRAM for this beast, which has players asking the obvious question: what have they been feeding him?
“Those swamp graphics better be baller,” said one X user. Another complained they can run Red Dead Redemption 2 at the highest settings, yet their PC would apparently struggle with this makeover of a 22-year-old game. “Seems a bit much for a remaster of a GameCube game but if that’s what we need to render Shrek’s highly detailed green skin then so be it,” joked another, while one more added: “They went full in with the GTA 6 aesthetics.”
The GTA 6 Connection
The comparison to Rockstar’s behemoth is no accident. Shrek 2 Remastered was revealed alongside a trailer parodying GTA 6, and it launches on November 10 — just over a week before GTA 6 itself. Despite the joke, nobody expected the remaster to demand graphical horsepower in the same neighborhood as GTA 6. But here we are.
Some posts raised concerns that the project could be a “vibe coded” remaster, but there is currently no AI disclosure on Steam to suggest that is the case — Valve requires developers to specify when AI is used during game creation or marketing. The remaster is being developed by port specialist Aspyr, the studio behind Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, Deus Ex: Remastered, and Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered — as well as the disastrous Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection. As the article put it: it’s a bit ogre the top.
