KPop Demon Hunters 2 Lands Guaranteed Theatrical Release After First Film's Record-Breaking Run

The KPop Demon Hunters sequel will not make the same mistake twice. After the first film became a streaming phenomenon with only a belated, limited theatrical rollout, KPop Demon Hunters 2 has reportedly secured a guaranteed theatrical release from day one.

The news was quietly buried in an October 20 report from The Hollywood Reporter digging into the departure of Netflix’s former film chief Dan Lin. According to THR, Lin helped lock in a theatrical release for the sequel — a move the outlet noted “hasn’t been officially announced” yet.

From Streaming Sleeper to Box Office Bet

The first KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most-watched offering ever, outperforming the streamer’s live-action films and TV series alike. It sparked a full-blown cultural moment: endless Halloween costumes, theatrical sing-along screenings, and live performances from the film’s singing voices — EJAE, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna — including an appearance at the Oscars.

The franchise’s footprint kept growing through brand collaborations with McDonald’s, Fortnite, and even LEGO. Given that explosion, it is no surprise that Netflix is rolling out the red carpet for the follow-up. The first film’s limited-time theatrical screenings proved there was real box-office appetite once the streamer paid attention — and this time, they are not leaving that money on the table.

What’s Next for the Huntrix Universe

News of a sequel first broke in November 2025, when Variety reported that Netflix and Sony had inked a deal for a second animated film, targeting a 2029 release. Around the same time, The Wrap outlined even bigger ambitions for the universe: a live-action movie, a stage play, and two sequels forming a film trilogy, plus talk of a spinoff series and a short film — though none of those projects have been officially announced by the streamer.

Co-director Maggie Kang has already teased that the story has plenty of room to grow. Speaking to Variety, she said the team had “set up so much for potential backstory,” with unanswered questions and unexplored territory left deliberately on the table — partly because “there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.” Huntrix’s quest to protect the Honmoon is far from over.

A Theatrical Release Changes Everything

A proper theatrical window would mark a real shift in how Netflix handles its biggest animated properties. The first film proved the audience will show up in theaters; giving the sequel a guaranteed big-screen launch from the start is Netflix betting on its own phenomenon rather than chasing it after the fact.

With 2029 still a few years out, expect the hype machine to build slowly — but if the sequel captures even a fraction of the original’s magic, theaters are in for a very loud opening weekend.
