IGN’s The Long Game series is back, and this time it’s heading to a galaxy far, far away. The new entry breaks down the best upgrades to invest in early for each vehicle in Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the new racing game from Fuse Games — because the points you spend now are the ones that pay off when the campaign’s toughest challenges arrive.

How Upgrades Work in Galactic Racer
Galactic Racer gives you three vehicles to choose from, each with very different strengths and weaknesses. Upgrades come in two flavors: temporary and permanent. During the single-player campaign you’ll pick from random sets of three temporary upgrades, while permanent upgrades — bought with tuning points, the game’s version of skill points — carry forward. Upgrade costs rise each time, but you can respec your points if you mess up, so no build is ever truly ruined.
The three chassis each get their own signature cornering tool: the Landspeeder gets Drift, the Speeder Bike gets Kinetic Burst, and the Skim Speeder gets Knife Edge. Knowing which stats matter for which vehicle is the whole game.
Landspeeder: Balanced and Built to Bang
The Landspeeder is your standard, well-balanced vehicle — easy handling and high defense against collisions, whether you’re kissing track walls or getting rammed by rivals. Since it’s naturally balanced, IGN recommends spending early tuning points on upgrades that open up more creative racing.
Top of the list is the Afterburner, which boosts acceleration, deceleration, and boost power — letting you boost more often and hit a higher top speed. Pair it with the Ramjet, which delivers a massive burst that can be used for raw speed or to settle a dispute with the racer in front of you. Just watch the heat: overusing the Ramjet turns your ride into expensive debris.
With upgrade sets randomized run to run, the smart play is knowing your vehicle’s identity before you spend. Invest in what fits the chassis, respec when you experiment, and the galaxy’s podium is yours.
