Swerve Strickland doesn’t think fans will ever get a real WWE vs. AEW cross-promotional event — at least not while he’s wrestling. Speaking to Billboard’s Carl Lamarre, the AEW star laid out why the dream matchup conversation is stuck in fantasy-land: it’s all about control.
For years, fans have debated dream matches across the two promotions, but aside from a handful of independent bouts involving WWE ID prospects or lower-card AEW talent, nothing of real consequence has materialized. Asked whether fans will ever see a genuine cross-promotional event in his lifetime, Swerve answered flatly: no.
“It’s All About Marketing”
Swerve pointed to brand protection as the core obstacle, comparing WWE’s mindset to the NFL: “WWE has to protect their shield.” In his view, neither company would allow the other side’s stars to look better — whether that’s Obi Femi and Gunther on WWE’s side or AEW’s own aces. The calculus gets even harder with the women’s roster, naming Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan and Chelsea Green as talents who would all need protecting.
The fantasy match everyone talks about — Seth Rollins vs. Will Ospreay — is the perfect example. Swerve called it “the generational thing,” but immediately flagged the impossible question: who do you protect, and who has the leverage? The locker rooms, he said, just want to wrestle: he’s close friends with WWE’s Carmelo Hayes, Jevon Evans and Oba Femi, and he wouldn’t care who won — “Double DQs. I don’t care.” But the companies do care, and that’s the wall.
“I Wanna Be the Fantasy Match”
When asked if he had anyone he’d want to face across the divide, Swerve dismissed the question entirely: “I don’t do those anymore. I wanna be the fantasy match. I’m at that stage now.” It’s a confident position from one of AEW’s biggest stars — currently one-third of The New Level trio with Kofi and Austin Creed, who dropped the AEW Trios Titles to Hangman Page and Brodido (Bandido & Brody King) at WrestleDream.
Until someone figures out a version where both sides get protected, Swerve’s verdict stands: don’t hold your breath.
