The girl groups of the early 2000s may get one more encore. Sara Bareilles has admitted she is “still holding out” for a movie adaptation of ‘Girls5eva’, the Peacock/Netflix comedy that was cut short after three seasons.
“We’d do it in a heartbeat,” the two-time Grammy winner said, referring to herself and her co-stars — including Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
‘I’d Do It for Very Little’
Speaking on The Zach Sang Show, Bareilles made clear how much the series meant to her: “I would do that show until I was dead in the ground. I loved it so much,” she said. “They just stopped paying us to do it. I would do it for free — I maybe wouldn’t do it for free, but I would do it for very little.”
A Show Cut Short
‘Girls5eva’ — a musical comedy about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 2000s trying to make a comeback — ran for three seasons from 2021 to 2024 across Peacock and Netflix. Netflix ultimately canceled the series, declining to order a fourth season.
Still, the fan campaign for more has never died down, and Bareilles’ comments show the cast is ready whenever someone greenlights the reunion. Whether a streamer picks up the call remains the open question — but the foursome is waiting by the phone.
