Bill Nighy has joined Caitríona Balfe in Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming horror thriller series Ascension at Apple TV, Variety has learned. The series, which received a series pickup at Apple in August, is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days.

Nighy will star alongside Balfe, who plays Rose, a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother described as brilliant at uncovering other people’s truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings, until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.

The premise plays to Cuarón’s strengths: atmosphere, tension and character-driven dread. A documentary filmmaker investigating a cult is a natural engine for slow-burn horror, and the twist from refuge to menace gives the series a clear arc from curiosity to danger.
For Nighy, the role adds another prestige television credit to a career spanning film and stage, while Balfe leads a series built around a complex central character. With Cuarón behind it and Apple TV backing it, Ascension arrives with serious pedigree, and the adaptation of Nevill’s novel gives it a ready-made foundation of cult horror lore.
No premiere date has been announced yet, but with casting now taking shape, Ascension is moving from announcement to production reality. Horror fans and Cuarón devotees alike will be watching for first looks as the series comes together.
