The Savannah College of Art and Design has completed a major expansion of its SCAD Film Studios in Savannah, Georgia, adding new professional soundstages and more than 50 backlot facades and practical interiors to the city’s production landscape. The 16-acre complex is billed as the largest university film studio complex in the world.

The expansion gives Savannah a bigger stage for professional productions while doubling as a working classroom for students. Backlot facades and practical interiors let filmmakers shoot convincing streetscapes, homes and businesses without leaving the lot, a major draw for productions weighing where to base themselves.
SCAD Film Studios expansion adds soundstages and 50 backlot facades
For a university studio, the scale is the story. Most film schools offer soundstages and equipment; SCAD’s complex is designed to host real professional productions alongside student work, giving students experience on working sets rather than simulations. That model has helped Savannah grow as a production hub in the southeastern United States.
The timing is good for Georgia’s film industry, which competes with other production centres for projects that bring jobs and spending to local communities. A larger studio footprint, with versatile standing sets, makes it easier to pitch Savannah as a one-stop location for film and television shoots.
For students, the benefit is practical: learning cinematography, production design and directing on a lot that also serves working professionals. The expansion cements SCAD Film Studios as both an educational facility and a serious player in Savannah’s production economy.
