Amazing Red says AJ Styles retirement may not be final
During an interview with Sports Matters TV in association with Wrestle Slam, Red was asked about potential dream matches following his TNA Hall of Fame induction and X-Division Championship victory. The interviewer specifically floated the idea of Red convincing Styles to come out of retirement for one more match in TNA.
It turns out Red has already been thinking about it. He compared the situation to his own experience with Will Ospreay, who kept pushing Red to wrestle again after he had stepped away. Eventually, it worked, and Red made his comeback.
He said: I totally agree with you. I feel like, just because I’ve been thinking that also. And the way Will Ospreay took me out of retirement and just kept pushing me, pushing me, and then I kind of came back.
Amazing Red points to AJ Styles still training at the dojo
That experience has Red wondering whether the same thing could happen with Styles. He said he has noticed Styles continuing to train and spending time at the dojo while helping his son, and from his perspective, those are signs Styles has not completely left wrestling behind.
He said: I see what you see, where I see AJ training. I see AJ going to the dojo. I see him following his son and making sure he’s doing here and there. And you can tell, you can tell. I don’t think you can leave wrestling.
Red knows firsthand how difficult it can be to walk away completely. He compared wrestling to an ex-girlfriend who keeps finding her way back into your life, even when you need some time apart, saying there are moments when a mental or physical break is needed, but wrestling is such a hard thing to leave.
As for actually getting Styles back in the ring, Red jokingly suggested he might have to take a different route and go through Styles’ son first, even floating the idea that he could wrestle Styles’ son at some point for the X-Division title.
Red and Styles were both huge parts of the X-Division’s early identity, so the idea of them sharing a TNA ring again naturally carries history with it. Red is not saying Styles is coming back, but he clearly has not ruled out trying to tempt his old rival into putting the boots on one more time if the timing ever feels right.
