AJ Styles invited Monica Monroe to WWE tryout at SummerSlam weekend
Monroe’s career changed in a major way at the beginning of October, when she defeated Laynie Luck to win the WWE ID Women’s Championship. The title win also earned her a WWE ID contract, cementing her place in WWE’s developmental pipeline.
But months before that breakthrough, Monroe attended a WWE tryout during SummerSlam weekend in Minnesota, and it turns out the invitation did not come through the usual channels. Speaking about the moment, Monroe said: It wasn’t just a typical, you know, the WWE Recruit page reached out to me. It was actually AJ Styles that reached out to me.
She continued: Yeah, so when I got the call, I freaked out, I wanted to cry obviously because he’s an incredible wrestler and just one of the greatest of all the time and just one of the best athletes out there.
AJ Styles praised Monica Monroe’s athleticism before WWE ID tryout
What Styles noticed, Monroe revealed, was her athleticism. She recalled: One of the things he said that he noticed was that I was really athletic. Coming from him, I’m like, ‘Are you joking me? You’re telling me I’m athletic? That’s crazy.’
From there, the pieces fell into place. Monroe explained that the tryout went through Gabe, who runs the WWE ID program, saying it was a combination of Styles and Gabe who got her in. But she was quick to credit her own grind too, adding: I think, of course, five years of hard work was really what got me in, being at Reality Of Wrestling. But, it was finally like acknowledged and seen.
She added: So yeah, it was a really cool moment. I cried a little bit of happy tears and then of course I called all my friends about it.
From a surprise call from AJ Styles to a WWE ID title reign, Monroe’s story is a reminder that years of hard work can pay off in the most unexpected ways, sometimes with a phone call from a legend.
