Johnny Gargano has finally explained why he spent six months lying around backstage instead of wrestling, revealing in an emotional vlog that he stopped trying because he was terrified of letting people down, especially his young son.

Johnny Gargano Explains Why He Laid Around for Six Months
Since early in the year, Gargano had been spotted planking backstage rather than competing. It was not until August, when he faced CM Punk in Cleveland, that he became Johnny Wrestling again. On his vlog, he addressed the question fans kept asking head-on.
“Everyone wants to know, ‘Why were you laying around and feeling sorry for yourself for six months? What was going on?'” Gargano said. “It’s complicated, but the easy answer is right there,” he added, pointing to his title wall. “I feel like everyone expected me to be that guy, and I tried to be that guy, and I couldn’t. I felt like I was letting a lot of people down. I hated that.”
The Treasure Question That Broke Johnny Gargano
The most heartbreaking part of the story involves his son Quill, who watches SmackDown and loves video games. In Quill’s mind, Gargano explained, when you win, you get the treasure.
“I don’t know how many times over the past year we’d fly out on Thursday, and before we’d leave, he would ask me, ‘Are you going to get the treasure?'” Gargano said. “I would tell him, ‘I’ll try. I’m really going to try.’ I would have a match on SmackDown, I’d lose, and Candice would have the phone in her hand, showing me Quill just crying. ‘Daddy lost. Daddy isn’t getting the treasure.’ That broke me.”
“In my head, it was easier to just not try than to get up, fail, and let people down,” he admitted. “I’m not saying that’s right or the way to go about things, but that’s what I did.”
Gargano said Cleveland changed everything, showing him that if he tries, he can make anything happen. He thanked the fans for continuing to support him, and thanked Sami Zayn for showing him the way back.
