Resident Evil Story Could End 'In the Next 10 Years,' Says Executive Producer Jun Takeuchi

Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi has revealed that Capcom’s flagship horror franchise has a definite ending in sight, and that conclusion could arrive within the next 10 years. The revelation came in a new interview with Yahoo Japan, where Takeuchi laid out the long-term plan for the series’ overarching story.

Takeuchi explained that the series’ story was never mapped out from the very beginning. Instead, it grew with each new game, and the team only began thinking in decade-long terms while planning the Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Resident Evil’s 10-Year Plan Started With RE2 Remake

According to Takeuchi, a 10-year branding concept was created during the planning stages for Resident Evil 2 Remake, and shaping that long arc was the most challenging part of the process. He suggested that players who work through the games in order will start to understand the meaning behind the sequence of the remakes.

With the release of Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year, Takeuchi believes that first 10-year chapter has now closed. That puts the franchise’s finale on a rough timeline of sometime in the next decade, even if the exact endpoint remains a closely guarded secret.

Multiple Resident Evil Games Still Coming Before the End

Fans should not panic just yet. Takeuchi confirmed that several more Resident Evil games are on the way before the story reaches its conclusion, though he refused to describe any of them in detail, saying it would spoil the fun.

The franchise is in rude health. Resident Evil 2 Remake remains the best-selling game in the series, and Resident Evil Requiem has already passed $500 million in revenue since its release earlier this year, even helping to drive console sales in Japan. Whatever the ending looks like, Capcom clearly intends to make the road there count, and Takeuchi left the door open for the characters to return in a new story afterwards.
