Amy Poehler has some notes for The Pitt, and she delivered them straight to its star. On Tuesday’s episode of her “Good Hang” podcast, Poehler sat down with Noah Wyle to talk about both ER and The Pitt, and she used the opportunity to give the hit medical drama one very specific piece of feedback: it needs more romance.
“You’re not asking me for feedback on ‘The Pitt,’ but I’m going to give you a little bit of feedback,” Poehler began, before delivering a line that is already making the rounds online: “If you’re gonna show the guts, you gotta show some butts.”

Amy Poehler Says The Pitt Needs More Romance
Poehler’s critique was delivered with her trademark humor, but it came with a real point. The Pitt is famous for its unflinching, graphic medical realism, and Poehler argued that if the show is willing to go that far with the gore, it should balance it out with a little affection.
“If you’re going to show so much guts and blood, if you’re gonna go there — and your makeup team is incredible. The stuff you do is bananas. I don’t watch most of it. I cover my eyes, but I mean, I can’t take it — But if you’re going to show that much, every time you got to get a little smooch. Someone’s gotta do a little smooch,” Poehler said.
Her praise for the show’s makeup team was genuine. The Pitt has earned a reputation for some of the most realistic medical sequences ever put on television, with injuries and procedures rendered in startling detail. Poehler admitted she often cannot even watch those scenes, covering her eyes through the most intense moments.
Noah Wyle, The Pitt and the Sexiest Man Alive Moment
The conversation came on the heels of Wyle’s appointment as People’s Sexiest Man Alive, a milestone that caps a remarkable career comeback. Wyle first became a household name as Dr. John Carter on ER, and his return to the medical drama world as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on The Pitt has turned him into one of television’s most talked-about stars all over again.
The Pitt, which follows the staff of a Pittsburgh emergency department across a single grueling shift, has become one of the most acclaimed dramas on television, praised for its realism, its performances and its relentless pace. But as Poehler pointed out, the show’s emotional intensity rarely extends to romance, and fans have noticed.
Whether the show’s writers take Poehler’s advice remains to be seen, but her message was clear: a show that can handle the bloodiest emergencies on TV can surely handle a kiss or two. And coming from one of comedy’s sharpest voices, the note landed exactly as intended, funny, affectionate and hard to argue with.
