Burnley have appointed Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, just four days after the sacking of Nicky Hayen, as the Clarets turn to a coach with a title-winning pedigree to rescue their season.

The 50-year-old arrives with a strong recent record. Celestini led FC Basel to a domestic double in 2024-25, winning both the Swiss Super League title and the Swiss Cup, and he most recently lifted the Russian Super Cup with CSKA Moscow.
Celestini, a former midfielder who won 35 caps for Switzerland and played for Lausanne, Marseille, Levante and Getafe, began his managerial career with Italian club Terracina before spells at Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano, Sion and Basel. He left CSKA by mutual agreement in May after 11 months in charge.
Fabio Celestini’s Task at Burnley: Ending the Winless Run
His task at Turf Moor is daunting. Burnley have started life back in the Championship badly, winning just once in the league this season to sit 22nd in the table, and they have now gone more than a year without a home league win after a torrid Premier League campaign last term.
“I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters’ ambitions,” Celestini said. “I know the situation we are in, and I have lived it before. Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle.”
New director of football Diego Lopez, appointed earlier this week to lead the search after Hayen’s departure following Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Lincoln City, praised the appointment. “Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for,” Lopez said. “He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley.” Details of Celestini’s contract have not been disclosed.
