Stu Grayson has recalled one of the worst injuries of his career — severing a nerve in his finger with barbed wire during a Ring of Honor bout — an injury so hidden that nobody in the ring, or in the crowd, even knew it had happened at the time.

Speaking to Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds, Grayson described the moment during a match pitting himself and The Righteous against Dark Order. As he wrapped his knee with barbed wire to set up a knee strike to John Silver in the face, he was stepping on the wire at the same time.

“As I pull, the barbed wire went inside my finger so far that it actually cut the nerve,” Grayson said. “So I lost the use of my finger for like a month.” Doctors reassured him that the nerve had not been severed completely and that feeling would return — and about a month or two later, he said, he had feeling in his fingers again.

Stu Grayson: The Injury Nobody in the Ring Even Knew About

What makes the story striking is its invisibility. Grayson called it one of the worst injuries he has had, yet it was, in his words, “nothing, really” to anyone watching — because no one in the ring even knew about it, and fans could not see it happen.

“It’s the kind of thing that no one in the ring even knew about. So the fans can’t even say, ‘oh, my God, he almost cut off his finger.’ Like, you don’t even see it. But it was so painful. But you can’t even brag about it because it’s just dumb,” he said.

It is a reminder of a side of wrestling fans rarely see: injuries are a common danger for performers in the ring, but some of the most painful moments happen quietly, without a dramatic spot or a visible reaction — just a wrestler carrying on through a match while dealing with damage the audience never notices.
