Families of the victims of the 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush have called on Activision to remove real footage of the disaster from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
According to the BBC, the bereaved families issued a statement saying they were “appalled” that footage of real-life rescue efforts in Itaewon — where almost 160 people died — appears in the game.
Where the Seoul Crush Footage Appears in Modern Warfare 4
Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward, thrusts players into a fictional North Korean invasion of South Korea. The real-life footage appears briefly in the game’s opening montage — heavily filtered and layered with effects, but still recognizable.
The families said: “Using such an event as material for a game made for entertainment is in itself highly inappropriate and senseless. If the game developer has even a minimum of courtesy and empathy towards the victims, it should take corrective action without delay.”
Activision Responds to Removal Demand
In a statement to IGN, Activision said it used the footage to “establish the game’s fictional narrative.” The company did not comment on the families’ request to remove it.
