Paul Heyman has managed some of the biggest names in wrestling history, but he says there is only one man who could have followed Brock Lesnar in his career: Roman Reigns. Speaking on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Heyman explained why the Tribal Chief is the most transformative talent he has ever worked with.

Heyman was first paired with Reigns in August 2020, when Reigns began his run as The Tribal Chief. They worked together for five years before splitting up, building one of the most dominant on-screen partnerships of the modern era.
Heyman on Why Roman Reigns Is Transformative
“Because there is no one else I could have followed up my run with Brock Lesnar with than Roman Reigns,” Heyman said. “As an athlete, top tier, 100%. Top tier. Great athlete. As a performer, his knowledge of being inside that ring is second to none. I’ve learned more from Roman Reigns than Roman Reigns has learned from his Wise Man.”
The quote captures the essence of their dynamic: Heyman has always described Reigns as the instinctive performer who knew exactly what to say, while he himself added the crucial ingredient of when to say it. That partnership carried Reigns through a historic championship run and made Heyman the defining voice of the Bloodline era.
The Wise Man on Naming the Tribal Chief
Heyman also revealed that the Tribal Chief moniker came naturally to him. “It was the easiest name I’ve ever come up with. He is a Tribal Chief and the WWE Universe is his tribe,” he said. “He has created an island of relevancy that, when you are with him, you are relevant because you are in the presence of Roman Reigns.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Heyman discussed his history with Brock Lesnar, the run that preceded the Reigns era, and even talked about trying to lure Ric Flair into fighting him. But the heart of the conversation was clear: after Lesnar, only one man could have carried the next chapter of Heyman’s career, and it was Roman Reigns.
