The new trailer follows Lionel, a mysterious young martial artist who arrives in the city of Vilasapara. Described as a highly skilled fighter capable of outclassing Cielo in a street fight, he is a force to be reckoned with. But the trailer teases one big question: what is his true reason for coming to this city?
Virtua Fighter Crossroads Trailer Reveals Lionel Rafale’s Story
VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS breaks from traditional competitive fighting games by delivering a narrative-driven action-adventure where story and combat seamlessly intertwine. Centered on the theme of “crossroads,” players experience a high-stakes omnibus narrative through the eyes of four different protagonists, each driven by their own convictions and burdened by their pasts.
Along the way, players will explore a living, breathing city filled with activities and choice encounters. Choices made in and out of battle forge alliances, determine consequences, and shape destinies — a big departure from the series’ arcade roots.
Star-Studded Creative Team Behind the Reboot
Sega has assembled an impressive creative team for the project. David Hayter (X-Men, Watchmen) is the world building supervisor, while Brad Kayne (Ghost of Tsushima) serves as lead writer. The scenario writers include Tsuyoshi Furuta (Like A Dragon series, Judgement) and Shinji Yamamoto (Persona 5).
Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio originally teased the new Virtua Fighter project back in December 2024, then showed off combat gameplay in August 2025. The series, which started in arcades in 1993 and is famous for its three-button punch/kick/block control system, has not had a true mainline sequel since Virtua Fighter 5 debuted in arcades in 2006.
With a 2027 launch window now set and characters like Lionel Rafale stepping into the spotlight, the Crossroads trailer signals that Sega is betting big on a story-first reinvention of its legendary fighting franchise.
