Joshua Jackson Teases 'Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll' in HBO Max Series 'How to Survive Without Me'

Joshua Jackson is teasing his new HBO Max series, “How to Survive Without Me” — and it sounds wilder than the family-drama premise suggests. Speaking Thursday at the Airbnb.org Gala in Los Angeles, the Dawson’s Creek star promised viewers “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” joking that “I’m getting too old for this s—.”

Co-created by husbands Greg Berlanti and Robbie Rogers along with Bash Doran, the series follows a family after the death of matriarch Beverly. “The show starts six months after the matriarch of this large family has passed away,” Jackson explained. “Because she was the glue that held this family together, she writes a book for her children that they can only read when they’re together.”

The hook is deliciously emotional: from beyond the grave, Beverly reaches out to her five adult children and her husband through a book they can only open as a group — forcing a fractured family to stay in each other’s lives whether they like it or not.

Between that setup and Jackson’s tease of a raucous tone, the series sounds like a grief drama with real bite — less quiet weepie, more messy, loud, lived-in family chaos.

The show marks a notable collaboration: powerhouse producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, You, Riverdale) teaming with his husband, former soccer star Robbie Rogers, alongside writer Bash Doran. With Berlanti’s hit-making track record and Jackson’s star power, “How to Survive Without Me” has all the ingredients of an HBO Max awards-season contender.

No premiere date has been announced yet, but expect updates as production continues.
