Kuromi the Movie Announced: Sanrio’s Mischievous Star Gets First Anime Film in 2027

Kuromi the Movie Release Date and Details

According to the announcement, distributor GAGA will release the film in Japan next year, and the film’s official website confirms the title as “Kuromi the Movie.” The site notes that release information for territories outside Japan will be announced once confirmed — a sign Sanrio has international plans for its breakout anti-heroine.

From Onegai My Melody Rival to Solo Star

Kuromi made her debut not in Sanrio’s own character goods line, but as the rival in the television anime Onegai My Melody back in April 2005. Over the years she grew into a star in her own right, landing in the top 5 of the Sanrio Character Ranking poll for six straight years.

Fans have already seen her headline the Kuromi’s Pretty Journey anime shorts in 2023 and 2024, plus the stop-motion series My Melody & Kuromi, which premiered on Netflix in July 2025. The 2027 film marks her biggest stage yet — and the announcement video hints Sanrio is treating this as a major franchise moment.
