Paul Heyman never misses a chance to call Brock Lesnar the most dangerous man on the planet — but his latest claim had people backstage in WWE raising eyebrows. And according to Fightful Select, not everyone is buying it.

Paul Heyman Brock Lesnar UFC Claim: “Could Still Be Heavyweight Champion”

Heyman recently claimed Lesnar could still be the UFC Heavyweight Champion today if diverticulitis hadn’t derailed his mixed martial arts career. The medical condition badly affected Lesnar during his UFC run — but suggesting he could be ruling the heavyweight division at 49 years old was, by any measure, a bold statement.

Fightful Select reports that several people within WWE weighed in, and the general feeling was that Heyman was simply doing what he does best: promoting Brock Lesnar. One source described Heyman as being in “promoter mode” — suggesting nobody backstage took the claim as a serious assessment of Lesnar’s chances against today’s UFC heavyweights.

WWE Backstage Reaction: Heyman in “Promoter Mode”

Lesnar’s credentials are real: he captured the UFC Heavyweight Championship and became one of the biggest crossover attractions in combat sports history. But staying champion at 49 is another matter entirely. For perspective, Randy Couture became the oldest UFC champion ever when he won the heavyweight title at 43 and held it at 44.

As Ringside News notes, there’s a difference between promoting a client as a legitimate threat and suggesting he could still hold UFC gold nearly two decades after first winning it. The backstage reaction, per Fightful Select, was to treat the comments as Heyman keeping Lesnar’s reputation larger than life — his job, even when the conversation leaves WWE behind.
