Gearbox has asked Borderlands fans to help shape the future of the franchise, teasing an “exciting overall direction” for what comes next. The call went out in a note to fans on November 2, 2026, just as Borderlands 4 wrapped up its Year 1 of DLC.

Gearbox Asks Fans What They Want From the Next Borderlands
Borderlands 4’s Year 1 roadmap is officially done, and Gearbox confirmed more content is coming to the looter shooter next year. “We just wrapped our Year 1 roadmap, and the team is cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year,” the studio said, adding that Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue in the meantime.
What the new content involves beyond those live-service staples was not specified — but the bigger news is that Gearbox is already looking past Year 2 content toward the next full game.
An Exciting Overall Direction for Borderlands
Gearbox told fans it is “taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole” and exploring additional character arcs, storylines, and an exciting overall direction for the future of the franchise. The studio pointedly asked the community: where can the series go next, which characters deserve more screen time, and which stories deserve a payoff?
The dev team invited fans to keep the conversation going on social media and on the Gearbox Devcast, promising they are listening. Don’t expect a Borderlands 5 announcement anytime soon, though — Gearbox cautioned that “big plans take time, and we need some room to work.”
