Hirayasumi anime premieres in January 2027 on NHK General
The series is set to premiere in January 2027 on NHK General in Japan, with Viz Media announcing an English-language release in 2027. The anime adapts Keigo Shinzō’s slice-of-life manga, which has built a devoted following for its warm, understated storytelling.
The production is a co-production between Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and Production +h. Kei Suezawa directs the series, with character designs by Naoyuki Asano (Urusei Yatsura 2022, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!), art direction by Mika Nishimura, and music by Kaori Sawada.
A story about slowing down
Hirayasumi follows Hiroto Ikuta, 29 — no girlfriend, no full-time job, no plan for the future, and completely happy about it. When he befriends the grouchy old woman next door, he unexpectedly inherits her house along with some complicated emotions. Soon his 18-year-old cousin Natsumi, a struggling art student, moves in and puts his easygoing lifestyle to the test.
Shinzō launched the manga in Weekly Big Comic Spirits in April 2021, and the series will conclude on November 16. It has over 1.1 million copies in circulation and has earned nominations for the Manga Taisho awards and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The manga previously inspired a live-action NHK series in November 2025, and Viz Media screened the anime’s world premiere episode at the Japan Society in New York City on October 7.
