Ever wished you could watch The Matrix without knowing what the red pill does? French film giant Pathé is running a wild experiment to find out — it wants to hypnotize 30 movie buffs to wipe their memory of a classic film, then let them experience it fresh on the big screen.
The event, dubbed Pathé Rewind, sees Pathé collaborating with hypnotist Victor Kraemer. Applicants were chosen based on their film preferences, motivation, availability and — crucially — consent. Selected participants get a one-to-one online hypnosis session with Kraemer, then are hypnotized again just before the screening.
Pathé Rewind: The Matrix, Se7en, La La Land or Interstellar
Three films are under consideration for the mind-wipe: The Matrix, Se7en, La La Land and Interstellar — with the final pick going to whichever the chosen 30 know best. The experiment takes place on Monday, November 9 at Pathé Buitenhof in The Hague.
Does Hypnosis Actually Work? Pathé Makes No Promises
Pathé is refreshingly honest about the odds: it admits there is no guarantee any of this will work. The company’s disclaimer states it accepts no liability for the outcome of the hypnosis sessions and makes no claims about hypnosis being an effective method. Still, the chance to ask “What is the Matrix?” with genuine curiosity one more time is tempting.
