SNL Cold Open Mocks Trump & MAGA’s Midterms Campaign
Just a month away from the volatile midterms and a president way down in the polls, there was once again a plethora of political material ripe for this week’s SNL cold open, and the NBC late-nighter went full MAGA, with some Mitch McConnell on the side.
Played by Mickey Day, the 84-year-old Kentucky senator offered a premature “Live from New York” before being cut off by RNC ad consultants desperate to turn things around for the GOP. There was a “He tricked us” Marco Rubio, portrayed by the always on point Marcello Hernández, and a 2028 J.D. Vance (Jeremy Culhane) that no one wanted to actually put in a spot.
Then there was Colin Jost’s Pete Hegseth, putting the fun in Defense Secretary once again.
“What’s up, schlong donkeys?” the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update co-anchor began in what might have been one of the greatest campaign ads ever (we’re talking 1954 Daisy level) if it was real. “Now listen up, okay, because I need all you patriots at home to do the gayest thing ever and vote. Thanks to me, the military finally has its priorities and sexuality straight.”
Tossing in some slam poetry, Jost’s Hegseth added: “In conclusion, vote, I guess. And remember, even if you’re stationed overseas, you can still vote by mail, which is the only by mail I’m cool with.”
Of course, this being a MAGA paraody and being SNL, the joke had to go further. Having said that, unlike many too-long cold open, this semi-morbid midterm skit work at the extra length – entirely because POTUS came to cook, base loathing and all.
“I’m President Trump and I approve this ramble,” started a typically and wonderfully unhinged James Austin Johnson.
Drawing from the fiction that is so much of Trumpland’s facts, he added in the fake ad: “We’re getting bogged out there, but not for long because I have a solution. If the Republicans win, I’ll give everyone $5,000, and that is not a bribe because I have no intention of following through on that promise.
“So, just pretend I’m on the ballot, okay? You have to use something called imagination. Imagination makes a MAGA nation. Wow, that’s pretty good. I can already see that written on the back of an obese woman’s booty shorts in dirty, disgusting Myrtle Beach. What a hell all this country is! It’s full of awful people.”
Perhaps but not in tonight’s spot-on cold open.
Delayed a tad again on the West Coast like last week’s season opener thanks to college football, tonight’s SNL is the second show of the 52nd season.
Verity star Dakota Johnson is hosting SNL for the third time. Coming off a big box office start for the Collen Hoover thriller, Johnson is joined by Turnstile as musical guest. This is the Maryland rockers’ SNL debut. Next week will see one-time dumped cast member Shane Gilis back for his third time hosting. The October 10 show will see the much-acclaimed Rosalía will be returning for her third SNL appearance.

Andrew Taking Legal Action Against Police Over Epstein Files Arrest
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is taking legal action against the police force that arrested him earlier this year.
According to The Telegraph, which broke the news, the issue revolves around the search warrants used by Thames Valley Police and its chief constable in relation to his arrest. The legality of these warrants are being challenged by Mountbatten-Windsor’s lawyers via judicial review, The Telegraph reported.
The warrant was obtained a day before he was arrested and for days afterwards police were pictured searching Mountbatten-Windsor’s propeties in Sandringham and on the Windsor estate.
“Whilst our investigation into misconduct in public office continues, we are engaged in legal proceedings in relation to warrants previously obtained from the Central Criminal Court,” a Thames Valley Police spokesperson told Deadline. “As these legal proceedings are currently ongoing, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”
Coming after his Prince title was stripped by his brother King Charles III, Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest in connection to the Epstein Files sent shockwaves around the world. The landmark moment represented the first time a modern British Royal had been arrested. Images circulated globally of Mountbatten-Windsor hiding in a car on the way back from the police station.
He was reported at the time to have been arrested over the alleged sharing of confidential material with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The pair’s links had been the subject of intense press coverage and speculation for years. Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied wrongdoing.
Since his arrest, Mountbatten-Windsor has been lying low on the Sandringham Estate.

Brian Cox BBC Scientist Strikes YouTube Deal With Sony
EXCLUSIVE: The first partnership for Sony Pictures Television’s (SPT) new digital studio was with Minecraft supremo Tom Simons AKA TommyInnit, but its second pact is in a different universe altogether.
Renowned British scientist and broadcaster Brian Cox has struck a deal with SPT International Production’s Digital Studio that will see the pair create his formats in the digital space for the first time.
Forged specifically for digital platforms, the content, which is part of a long-term partnership rather than specific series, will span science, astronomy and culture. “The collaboration aims to build a distinctive destination for science storytelling that combines world-class production values with the accessibility and immediacy of creator-led media,” SPT said.
Not to be confused with the Succession star, Cox, who already has a YouTube channel with more than 16,000 subscribers, is one of the UK’s best-known scientists. The particle physicist has presented reams of science shows, mostly for the BBC, including Stargazing Live, The Planets and Brian Cox’s Adventures in Space and Time.
Science has proved a hugely popular genre on YouTube and the BBC itself has been pushing further into the space. At the same time, traditional TV presenters like Holly Willoughby and Amol Rajan have started going direct to their audiences via YouTube.
Cox said: “It’s more important than ever to find new and engaging ways to deliver science and fact-based content to audiences, wherever they consume it. This collaboration with the Sony Pictures Television team is tremendously exciting for me, because we share a desire to make high quality, intellectually challenging, informative and entertaining content available to as many people as possible, across as many platforms as possible. We will have succeeded if our audience are entertained, challenged, terrified, excited and awestruck in equal measure by the dizzying picture of the universe painted by modern science.”
Sacha Khari and Matt Ford, the digital studio’s co-leads, said Cox is “better than anyone” at “taking the most complicated questions about existence and making them feel accessible and entertaining.” “On paper, Brian Cox and Tom Simons might look worlds apart, but there’s actually a lot in common. We work closely with distinctive talent, develop original ideas around them and grow audiences together to create scale and staying power,” they added.
Led by ex-BBC Studios and Channel 4 executives Ford and Khari, Sony’s digital studio launched last year to “engage with UK content creators, create digital originals and build creator partnerships.”
The TommyInnit deal, struck with the creator who runs the most popular Minecraft channel on Twitch, has seen him forge a 100 Questions YouTube series with guests including Cox and Stephen Fry.
