Girls is coming back.
HBO has ordered a limited run of five episodes of Lena Dunham’s hit comedy with the majority of the original cast confirmed to return.
Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah, Allison Williams returns as Marnie, Jemima Kirke is back as Jessa, Zosia Mamet comes back to play Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannells, who recurred as Elijah in the first three seasons before joining the cast as a regular in season four, is also back.
There is, however, no sign of Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s boyfriend Adam. Dunham wrote in her recent memoir Famesick that Driver was “verbally aggressive” during filming of the show.
Production will begin next year, which is 15 years after its premiere and ten years after the Season 6 finale.
Dunham, who also created Netflix’s Too Much, which premiered last year, has long talked about wanting to return to the Girls universe.
Last year, she told Indiewire that if she had something “really specific” such as millennial women becoming mothers or stepping into menopause, she would “always want to work with those people again”.
In that interview, she also suggested Mamet’s Shoshanna was divorced from the New York Mayor, Williams’ Marnie is on her third marriage, Jessa is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia, and Driver’s Adam is a cult theater actor living in Berlin, while Dunham’s own Hannah teaches at Bard and has a son and a chef girlfriend.
Dunham created, wrote and directed the series and will exec produce the return alongside Judd Apatow, and Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen for Good Thing Going. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells serve as co-executive producers.
Jenni Konner, who served as co-showrunner and a close creative partner to Dunham during Girls, is also not returning. In Famesick, Dunham wrote that she hasn’t spoken to Konner since 2018.
Dunham said, “We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop… It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”
Amy Gravitt, EVO, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Programming, added, “We’re thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty. To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah is a massive understatement, but we know fans – old and new – will be happy to see how they’ve grown and relieved to see that they’re still the Girls we knew way back when.”

The American Film Institute said Tuesday that Quentin Tarantino will appear in conversation in a special event at this month’s AFI Fest, which will also screen his 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The talk and screening will take place October 23 at the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood venue where the film had its world-premiere screening. The Sony pic went on to gross $409.4 million at the global box office and nab 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Directing and Original Screenplay.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie starred in the film, which tells a Tarantino-ified tale of Hollywood set during the time of the Manson family.
Pitt won the Supporting Actor Oscar for playing Cliff Booth, a character he is reviving for David Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, from a script from Tarantino. The Netflix sequel is prepping for bow in Imax theaters November 25, where it will stay for two weeks before making its way to the streamer beginning December 23.
“As the world awaits The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, AFI is proud to celebrate where it all began,” AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said in a release announcing the Tarantino event. “And to do so with one of the greatest storytellers of our generation is a gift to all who love the movies.”
The 40th AFI Fest runs October 21-25 in Hollywood, kicking off with the U.S. premiere of Laika’s Wildwood among a lineup of 158 films. Red Carpet Premieres will include the world bow of The Mosquito Bowl, I Play Rocky and Ray Gunn, with special screenings set for 14th, Ashes, Behemoth!, Bitter Christmas, Bunker, Clarissa, Elsinore, Josephine, The Man I Love, Mouse, Tangles and Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine.
The fest closes with Siân Heder’s Being Heumann.

The first trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has arrived, plunging viewers into a modernized retelling of C.S. Lewis’ first book in The Chronicles of Narnia. The film arrives in theaters February 10 and on Netflix April 2.
Beatrice Campbell’s Polly Plummer and David McKenna’s Digory Kirke kick off the clip wondering if Uncle Andrew Ketterly is mad after a sheet uncovers the beloved wooden wardrobe that marks the gateway to Narnia.
“Sometimes, one story is the beginning of all others,” a voice that sounds like Ciarán Hinds says as the carved cabinet structure stands tall up in the Ketterly attic.
“Mom always calls him a magician,” Digory tells Polly as Daneil Craig’s eccentric Uncle Andrew picks up the bottom of a green glass bottle.
Digory isn’t sure if he believes in magic, or if he’s ready to see what’s on the other side of a different wooden door, which opens into Uncle Andrew’s colorful laboratory.
Polly asks if magic is real after picking up a golden ring, and Andrew responds that he is, in fact, a magician.
“See for yourself,” he says as he hands more jewelry to Digory.
The children explore “infinity worlds,” but Digory’s touching a certain magical object before Polly can get to him to tell him not to summons Emma Mackey’s Jadis, the White Witch, who wears silver sparkly eyeshadow and whispers, “Come to me, my power.”

“Magic, it’s everywhere,” Carey Mulligan’s Mabel Kirke says.
A winged horse leaps into the air off of a cliff, carrying the pair of kids.
