5 Windows 11 Settings That Actually Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer

Is your laptop dying by mid-afternoon? Before you blame the battery, blame the settings. Windows 11 has several power-saving options buried in Settings that can add real hours to your runtime — and most people never touch them. Here are the tweaks that actually move the needle, based on Microsoft’s own guidance and long-running optimization testing.

1. Switch Power Mode to Best Power Efficiency

The single biggest win is hiding in plain sight. Open Settings, then go to System > Power & battery > Power Mode, and set the On battery dropdown to Best power efficiency (or Balanced if you need a bit more pep). Many laptops ship on Balanced or even Best performance, which burns through charge for speed you don’t need while browsing or writing. This change takes effect instantly — no restart required.

2. Turn On Battery Saver Earlier

Battery saver cuts background activity and visual effects when your charge runs low. Instead of waiting for the default trigger, go to Settings > System > Power & battery and set “Turn battery saver on automatically at” to a higher percentage, like 30 or 40%. You can also flip it on manually from the battery icon in the taskbar whenever you know you’ll be away from a charger for a while.

3. Dim the Display and Kill Background Apps

The display is typically the single largest power consumer in a laptop, often accounting for half of all drain. Drop brightness to a comfortable level and enable adaptive brightness under Settings > System > Display. Then head to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and disable background activity for apps you don’t need constantly syncing — cloud storage clients, music streamers and chat apps are the usual suspects.

4. Generate a Battery Report

Still draining fast after the tweaks? Run powercfg /batteryreport in a terminal to generate an HTML report showing your battery’s full-charge capacity versus its design capacity. If full charge has dropped below 80% of the original, the battery itself may be aging — and no software setting will fully fix that. Also switch off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you don’t need them, and shorten the screen-off and sleep timers under Power & battery.
