Audiences going into “You Can See Everything” expected to be taken aback — but few predicted one of the buzzy A24 documentary’s most talked-about moments: a full-frontal shot of Billy Evans, partner of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Now co-director Lance Oppenheim has explained how the jarring shower scene came to be.

You Can See Everything Billy Evans shower scene explained
Oppenheim, who co-directed the documentary with Nathan Fielder, addressed the scene in a recent GQ interview. Asked why Evans would agree to appear naked on camera, he was candid: “I honestly don’t know. It’s beyond me, but I’ve heard interesting theories that people have when they see it.”
According to Oppenheim, Evans himself raised the idea, asking the filmmakers: “Want to film me showering?” The scene was then captured with a camera in the bathroom, a camera on Fielder and a camera outside the bathroom — and after Evans leaves the shower, he looks at the camera and smiles, a beat Oppenheim says is visible in the finished film.
Why the moment has audiences talking
The shot has become one of the documentary’s most discussed passages precisely because it was so unexpected. Viewers braced for revelations about Holmes and the world around her instead found themselves confronting an intimate, unguarded moment from a figure who has largely stayed out of the spotlight.
Oppenheim’s account suggests the scene was not a gotcha or an accident of editing, but something Evans himself proposed — which only deepens the curiosity around it. Whether audiences read it as candour, provocation or simply indifference to being seen, as Oppenheim put it, Evans “didn’t care about being seen naked.”
The documentary continues to draw attention as awards season approaches, with its unconventional approach — and moments like this one — keeping it firmly in the conversation.
