Hollywood Reporter: Live-Action Naruto Film in Talks to Cast Charles Melton as Kakashi – News

The Hollywood Reporter posted on Thursday that Charles Melton (Riverdale, Beef) is “in final negotiations” to play the mentoring ninja Kakashi Hatake in Lionsgate’s live-action film adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto‘s Naruto manga. Melton received two Emmy nominations (Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor) for producing and co-starring in the second Beef season (pictured right).

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day) is directing the film, and is also producing the film through his company Hisako alongside Jeyun Munford. Arad ProductionsAvi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu as well as Jeremy Latcham are listed as producers.

The official website for the Naruto franchise announced on July 10 that the live-action film project had begun a global casting search for the main characters Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, with casting for other characters to come at a later date.

Entertainment news website Variety previously reported in November 2023 that Tasha Huo (Red Sonja, Tomb Raider animated series) was working on the script for Lionsgate’s live-action Naruto movie.

The Tracking Board Hollywood news website had reported in July 2015 that Lionsgate had closed the rights to adapt the manga into a live-action film, and had been in talks with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) to direct. The Naruto and Boruto stage presentation at the Jump Festa event confirmed in 2016 that Lionsgate and Gracey were working on the film, and that original creator Kishimoto was involved with the production.

The Tracking Board also reported in 2015 that Avi Arad (Hollywood’s Ghost in the Shell, Gamba: Gamba to Nakama-tachi) and his son Ari Arad were producing the film at Arad Productions, and Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley were overseeing the film.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in August 2017 that Jon and Erich Hoeber (Red, Red 2) were on board to rewrite the script for the film.

Collider reported in March 2018 that Gracey stated the staff were still working on the film’s script because he wanted to make sure the work has the approval of Kishimoto. It is currently unclear if any of the above people besides Huo are still working on the project.

Kishimoto launched the ninja manga in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1999, and ended the series in November 2014. The manga has spawned the Naruto and Naruto Shippūden television anime series, original video anime (OVA) projects, several anime films, spinoff manga, the Boruto sequel manga and anime series, a series of novels, stage plays, and video games.

Obey Me! Franchise Removes Voice Actor Miura Ayme Due to Alleged Contact With Underage Fan – News

NTT Solmare and the staff for the Obey Me! franchise announced on Monday that they have mutually decided to remove voice actor Miura Ayme from the role of the character Asmodeus in the franchise due to them confirming through an investigation that Ayme allegedly had private contact with a fan “believed to be” under the age of 18 at the time. The announcement noted that while “no sexual contact was confirmed,” the contact still “crossed the professional boundaries expected of our cast members.”

The announcement further noted that the staff will continue Asmodeus’ story in the franchise, and will share plans on re-casting of the character (including in the upcoming Obey Me! Sinner’s Choice: Lucifer game) and in-game voice updates at a later date.

The original romance simulation mobile game Obey Me! – One Master to Rule Them All centers on a human who is selected to become an exchange student at RAD, a school for demons. Awaiting the protagonist are seven demon brothers each with a unique personality. The game app by NTT Solmare Corporation is part of the overall Shall We Date? series of otome games.

The game inspired an anime that debuted with English subtitles on the official YouTube channel for the Obey Me! game app in July 2021. Funimation also streamed the anime, and it describes the story:

Based on the popular mobile game of the same name, the Obey Me! anime is a series of shorts depicting the lives of the brothers from the game. It’s the perfect complement to the story you already know and love!

The anime’s second season launched in July 2022. Both anime now stream on Crunchyroll.

Ayme previously attended Anime Expo alongside other Obey Me! cast members in July 2025 as part of a fan meeting.
