UK Watchdog Group Boycotts Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G Movie

Published

on

Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedian well accustomed to controversy — and his latest feature “Ali G: Who Iz I?” is shaping up to stir plenty.

The comedian’s guerilla-style filmmaking, which blurs the line between documentary, social satire and hidden-camera pranks, has ensnared countless powerful figures and enraged even more. Now his new movie resurrecting his British hip-hop character for a new generation, opening in theaters this October, is facing accusations of racism and even a boycott campaign from U.K. watchdog group NewsCord.

The email campaign company rallied its members into signing up to send emails to the world’s top theatrical chains to stop them from screening the film. The company’s site shows it has sent over 37,000 emails so far. Sony is distributing the film abroad while Amazon MGM Studios is handling its release stateside.

“Black British comedians called the character ‘an alibi for racism’ in 2000; Jeanette Winterson asked what separates it from the Black and White Minstrels; Kazakh and Arab organisations documented the harm of the catalogue behind it. Sony Pictures UK is selling it with the line ‘He iz back. We ain’t liable.’ The screens belong to the chains, and a booking is a choice,” the campaign’s homepage reads.

The campaign concludes: “Send a personalised letter to the booking desks of the remaining major chains in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Mexico and the Middle East, verified addresses only, asking each to leave the film off its screens.”

Previous reports claimed that Picturehouse, which describes itself as the “U.K.’s leading neighborhood cinemas café-bars, restaurants and live events,” had agreed not to screen the film. But its response to NewsCord saying they “currently do not have any plans to screen this film on its release” is reportedly the chain’s standard response for films not yet on their schedule and does not confirm their adherence to a boycott.

When Cohen shared the trailer for the film, he wrote, “In an age where a comedian’s career can be ended by a single un-PC joke, I thought I’d play it safe and bring this guy back.”

The whole point of Ali G, like all of Cohen’s characters, is to play the fool and use exaggerated tropes to expose the real-life xenophobia and racism that permeates the culture. (There was a reason that the latest “Borat” movie came out right before the presidential election in 2020.) Yes, Ali G is hopelessly out of date. That is part of the joke – and the broader intent behind the character.

A Danish theater chain wrote back to NewsCord, explaining why they would be showing the film.

“We understand very well that Sacha Baron Cohen’s satire, characters and means have sparked debate over the years, and that a figure like Ali G can be experienced as offensive, problematic or provocative for that individual. As a cinema, however, it is a fundamental principle for us to present a broad and diverse film program. Film is an art form that ranges from the broadly entertaining to the sharpy satirical and controversial. The cinema is a space for many types of film and here one will inevitably encounter works that provoke, challenge or repel,” the letter read.

And while Cohen’s announcement of the film has been met with heated reactions on his social media — many targeting the actor’s support of Israel but others calling out the new movie as the work of a “racist hack” — others showed support for the film, including prominent figures like Kevin Durant and A$AP Rocky.

“My brother Sacha Baron Cohen is back. Let’s go,” Durant wrote on Instagram.

“Ali G: Who Iz I?” was co-written, produced and directed by Cohen.

Amazon MGM Studios will release the film on Oct. 23. Representatives for the studio declined to comment on the campaign.

‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ Trailer Rerelease Sets Viewership Record

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: The trailer for Avengers Endgame: Encore netted 77M views in its first 24 hours, which is over four times the amount of any previous trailer re-release.

Top Gun (1986) earned 19M views in the first 24 hours of the trailer re-release ahead of the film soaring back into theaters in May 2026 for a one-week 40th anniversary run alongside Top Gun: Maverick. James Cameron’s first Avatar film rerelease trailer got 14M views, and the re-release trailer for Titanic got 13M.

We heard the conversation around the social volume was spurred by eagerness for Doomsday footage, nostalgia for the theatrical experience of Avengers: Endgame in 2019 when the film first came out, fans’ personal connection to Endgame and jokes about Endgame spoilers.

Re-releasing in theaters Sept. 25, Avenger: Endgame held the record for second highest grossing film at the domestic box office up until Spider-Man: Brand New Day dethroned the concluding Marvel movie. The special Encore presentation of Endgame includes an exclusive look at the highly anticipated December 18 release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. An additional sneak peek at the film will also be available to audiences who see Avengers Endgame: Encore on IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens.

Avengers: Doomsday has been building momentum since Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse as Victor Von Doom was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.

Avengers: Endgame is highly recommended as required viewing ahead of Doomsday for those wanting to be caught up on their comic book lore going into the next installment. The re-release trailer featured footage from opening night on April 26, 2019 during the popular scene in which all of the Marvel heroes come together to defeat Thanos with Captain America’s (Steve Rogers) words, “Avengers assemble!”

It seems that Doomsday could echo the epic coming together of the entire MCU — which has expanded since the release of Endgame — with a stacked cast confirmed for the film. Several X-Men and Captain America films are also on the docket for refreshers to watch.

Kenan Thompson To Fill In For Simon Cowell On ‘America’s Got Talent’

Published

on

In a full-circle moment, Kenan Thompson is returning to NBC‘s America’s Got Talent as guest judge for the Quarterfinals Round 3 episode on Sept. 1. He will be filling in for judge Simon Cowell, also AGT‘s creator/executive producer, who has been sidelined by back surgery.

Cowell was not on the show this week as he is taking time off to undergo the procedure, described as routine and linked to the serious e-bike accident he suffered in August 2020, which led to complex spinal injury and long rehab. The recovery took him out of commission from the 2020 season of AGT, with guest judges filling in.

That included Thompson, who sat alongside judges Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara as well as host Terry Crews for two episodes during the same stage of the competition, live quarterfinals.

“This is incredible,” Thompson said at the time. “Seize the moment, if you have nerves turn those nerves into superpowers.”

In 2020, Thompson was the second guest judge subbing for Cowell, following a stint by Kelly Clarkson. This time, the Saturday Night Live veteran is the first one to take the seat; this week’s live quarterfinal episodes (performances and results) featured Mel B, Mandel and Vergara only behind the judging table.

“A comedy legend is taking over the Judges’ table!,” the show said on IG, announcing Thompson’s guest appearance.

Did Amazon Leak Cause Box Office ‘Mutiny’ For Jason Statham Movie?

Published

on

A quick update on this unfortunate situation before the weekend.

We told you last week that buyers were understandably fuming about Amazon‘s unintentional leak before its theatrical run of the Jason Statham action movie Mutiny.

Since then, the mutiny has seemingly been quelled, but buyers are still deeply frustrated and many are hoping that Amazon does what’s described to us as “the good-faith thing” by offering some kind of compensation for the leak.

The $50 million movie has now opened in most territories. Buyers we’ve spoken to in multiple markets are disappointed with returns; multiple have told us that the film hasn’t performed where they thought it would. Last weekend’s U.S. take didn’t get to $8M. The UK only mustered $500,000. There were other soft openings. Its current box office gross currently stands at around $16M global.

There are a number of potential reasons for this, including the incredible staying power of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Maybe Statham stans just didn’t fancy this one. It’s possible. One potential reason is also piracy.

We’ve been sent multiple examples of the movie being pirated online. According to anti-piracy site Torrentfreak, the movie is the most pirated of the week.

“The genie is out of the bottle,” one person close to the movie told us. “It’s very rare to get a 4K fully mixed version of a film online. It’s usually a bad recorded camera version. The box office is certainly a bad surprise. This film had similar metrics to other successful Statham movies but it’s running at half or less of the box office.”

“None of this is scientific,” a buyer admitted to us. “But there’s no way the leak cost people zero. It’s hard to know if it cost hundreds of dollars or millions in each territory but it’s clearly being streamed globally. Lionsgate has been trying to take the movie down from a number of sites. The hope is there’s something offered by Amazon to buyers to make this pill easier to swallow.”

How much could be offered and to who? It’s hard to say. Amazon declined comment for this piece. As did the producers and Lionsgate.

“There has been a lot of finger-pointing,” one overseas buyer said of the mood this week. “What Amazon did was totally unacceptable. But no one is taking a lead on it internationally. And these things are so hard to quantify. There could also be other factors at play.”

Statham is understood to be among those disappointed by the leak and its potential effect. Lionsgate is understood to be in talks with Amazon about next steps and is continuing to assess the impact.

The picture is expected to be become a little clearer once Premium VOD numbers emerge in coming weeks. In the meantime, there’s seemingly little appetite for litigation. According to lawyers who have been consulted by interested parties, the contractual chain of title on the project apparently means that international buyers would have to sue the producers, who in turn would have to sue Amazon. No one is keen to do anything like that from what we can glean. Ultimately, these are all parties who work together frequently and who generally have good relationships and need each other. It was a bad mistake, but one made in genuine error.

“It was a f*ck-up and it sucks. To say it had no impact on the box office is pie in the sky,” one buyer claimed to us. “Ultimately, we just hope Amazon does the right thing by its partners.”
