FIFA, global football’s governing body, confirmed that altercations between Argentina and Spain players following the latter’s victory in the World Cup final will be investigated.

There were unsavoury scenes after the full-time whistle as Spain players ran on to the pitch to celebrate their side’s victory.

Argentina defender Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Spain midfielder Rodri in the stomach as he ran on to the pitch to celebrate his side’s success.

That preceded a wider melee in the centre of the pitch, where Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat before throwing his opponent Gavi to the ground.

In a statement on Monday, FIFA said: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents.”

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card in the third minute of added time at the end of the regulation 90 minutes, picking up a second yellow following a late challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

Four other Argentina players, including the substitute Paredes, were booked during the match alongside the team’s head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Spain won the final 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres in the 106^th minute.
