EXCLUSIVE: Good Deed Entertainment has acquired Grandmasters, a documentary from award-winning filmmaker Liza Mandelup that uncovers drama roiling the world of top-tier chess.

Grandmasters premiered as a documentary series at Tribeca Festival in June but will launch in theaters as a nonfiction feature told in three chapters. Good Deed plans to release the film nationwide on October 11 at AMC locations.

“In Grandmasters, the once esoteric and uninspired world of top-level competitive chess is thrown into turmoil when an eccentric German entrepreneur enlists Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen to launch a new league that aims to revolutionize the game, challenge the sport’s governing body, and ‘make chess cool,’” notes a synopsis. “Expertly helmed by Mandelup (Jawline, Caterpillar), with access and support provided by Chess.com, the documentary chronicles the rivalries, reinventions, and personal battles shaping the modern pursuit of greatness in the game of kings.”

In a statement, Mandelup said, “I’m constantly drawn to people who have built their lives around a single pursuit, so getting to spend time with some of the best chess players in the world was immediately exciting to me. What I didn’t expect was how much drama sat just beneath the surface. I wanted to get beyond the idea of a chess genius and make something funny, intimate, and deeply human about the people behind the game.”

Good Deed released Mandelup’s documentary Caterpillar in theaters last November.

“Liza has a gift for bringing audiences inside a story, and the beautifully executed Grandmasters opens up the world of chess in a way audiences haven’t seen before,” commented Erik Donley, head of acquisitions and distribution at Good Deed Entertainment. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Liza once again on another culturally captivating story.”

Chess has proved fertile ground for fictional exploration on screen, to whit the hit Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit (2020); Pawn Sacrifice, starring Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber (2014); The Luzhin Defence (2000), and Searching for Bobby Fischer, starring Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne, Joan Allen and more (1993). Mandelup’s film explores the real thing.

“We have been living in the drama of top-level chess for decades, and knew that the outside world had only seen a very small portion of it,” observed Danny Rensch, co-founder and Chief Chess Officer of Chess.com. “The story of these players is so much bigger than the board, and Good Deed understood that immediately. Now we get to share it as widely as it deserves.”

Grandmasters is a Boardwalk Pictures production, starring Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Jan Henric Buettner, Hans Niemann, Danny Rensch, Levy Rozman, and Lotis Key. In addition to directing the film, Mandelup executive produced the project alongside Jordan Wynn, Andrew Fried, Lana Barkin, Patrick Altema, and Alex Leibow. The film is produced by Max McGillivray and Christian Vazquez.

Good Deed Entertainment is an independent film studio “built around distinctive voices and underserved audiences.” Recent releases include Looking Through Water (Michael Douglas) and Drive Back Home (Alan Cumming), alongside a catalog of acclaimed films such as Lucky Grandma, To Dust, and the Academy Award nominee Loving Vincent.

The upcoming film from Briarcliff Entertainment dropped its trailer on Thursday, introducing Kal Penn as Dr. Sandeep Kapoor opposite Linda Hamilton, David Julian Hirsh and Abbie Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith.

“‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’ follows Dr. Sandeep Kapoor after his life is turned upside down when he is implicated in the death of his former patient, model and reality television star Anna Nicole Smith,” per the logline. “Set against the height of the early 2000s tabloid era, the film chronicles Kapoor’s fight to clear his name as paparazzi descend on his office, police raid his home, private journals are leaked and every aspect of his personal life becomes public.”

“With the guidance of respected attorney Ellyn Garofalo, Kapoor must navigate a high-stakes drug conspiracy trial while confronting the intersection of celebrity, justice, politics and personal redemption,” the synopsis continued. “The film explores the intense legal battle and media frenzy that followed one of the most sensational celebrity cases of the early 2000s.”

Written and directed by Thane Economou, the movie comes nine years after the real-life Kapoor released his memoir, “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor: My Life Before, During and After Anna Nicole Smith.”

Smith died in February 2007 at the age of 39 due to combined drug intoxication.

“Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” hits theaters on Oct. 16.

Donald Trump reported more than 1,000 purchases and sales of corporate securities in June, including those of Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Co. and Comcast.

The White House has previously said that the president’s stock and bond portfolio is independently managed.

According to the president’s latest financial report, released by the Office of Government Ethics, he sold between $50,001 and $100,000 of Netflix on June 12, another $500,001 to $1 million on June 18, between $15,001 and $50,000 on June 16, and between $50,001 and $100,000 on June 24. He bought between $1,001 and $15,000 on June 3, and between $1,001 and $15,000 on June 23.

Per the filing, the president also purchased between $50,001 and $100,000 in The Walt Disney Co. on June 18, and between $1,001 and $15,000 on June 3. He purchased between $1,001 and $15,000 in Warner Bros. Discovery on June 16. The form also showed the sale of $1,001 to $15,000 in Comcast securities on June 16, $1,001 to $15,000 on June 23, $1,001 to $15,000 on June 3, and between $100,001 and $250,000 on June 24.

The report also showed the sale of $100,001 to $250,000 shares of Amazon on June 12 and the sale of $100,001 to $250,000 on June 24. It showed the purchase of $15,001 to $50,000 of Amazon on June 15, the purchase of $1,001 to $15,000 on June 23, the purchase of $1,001 to $15,000 on June 3.

The OGE report does not require specific amounts of sales or purchases, but ranges.

A White House official did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But the administration has previously said that “all holdings are maintained in discretionary accounts and invested through computer-based model portfolios that automatically replicate recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000.”

The official said that Trump does not have the ability to “direct, influence, or provide input regarding how the portfolio is invested or when investments are bought or sold.”

Some of the companies have regulatory business before the Trump administration. The Justice Department approved Paramount’s proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery on June 12. Disney, meanwhile, is challenging the FCC over its order that it submit the licenses of its eight owned stations for early renewal. Disney filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the agency earlier this month.
