BIGBANG’s Daesung has set K-pop social media ablaze after declaring that his bandmate G-Dragon “paved the way” for everything in K-pop since 2006, reigniting one of fandom’s most explosive debates.
During a recent show, Daesung told the audience he was sure of it: G-Dragon had paved the way for “literally everything” in the industry since 2006. The clip spread across social media within hours, with VIPs celebrating the shout-out as iconic.

Fans Split Down the Middle
Reactions were sharply divided. Some fans praised Daesung for giving his fellow BIGBANG member his flowers publicly, calling the moment a long-overdue acknowledgment of G-Dragon’s influence on K-pop’s sound, fashion, and global ambitions. Clips of the comment racked up thousands of shares as supporters echoed the sentiment.
But the comment also drew heavy backlash. Critics called the remark “embarrassing,” arguing that claiming one artist paved the way for everything dismisses the contributions of other acts — especially BTS, whose supporters maintain the group made K-pop a truly global genre. Others took aim at the very framing, with one widely shared post arguing that “if you really paved the way, you wouldn’t need to keep reminding everyone yourselves.”
A Familiar Battleground
This is far from the first “paved the way” skirmish in K-pop. Earlier this year, Taeyang faced a flood of comments insisting “BTS paved the way” after an interview, and the phrase has become a standing flashpoint between second, third, and fourth-generation fandoms. With Daesung now adding fuel to the fire, the debate shows no signs of cooling off anytime soon.
