BTS leader RM is once again at the center of a heated social media firestorm after an old 2015 clip from the tvN show Problematic Men resurfaced online — and singer Lee Jang Won is going viral for the way he “clocked” him in it.

In the resurfaced clip, RM — who was a regular cast member on Problematic Men alongside Jun Hyun Moo, Kim Ji Seok, Lee Jang Won, Ha Seok Jin, Joo Woo Jae, and DDotty — responded playfully to a discussion about improving English-speaking skills with a drawn-out “What’s up bro?” Lee Jang Won immediately fired back: “Play your own race.”
Why the Clip Blew Up Again
The moment, originally broadcast in 2015, exploded on X this week. Critics accused RM of putting on what they described as a Black American accent — a “blaccent” — and praised Lee Jang Won for calling it out in real time a decade ago, long before such debates went mainstream in K-pop fandom spaces. Many commenters noted that even the show’s own caption in the clip labeled RM the “Black feel maknae,” suggesting the joke landed the same way back then.
Others pushed back hard, arguing that treating the casual greeting “What’s up bro?” as a racist caricature is itself a racist presumption — especially from a Korean celebrity who, as multiple fans pointed out, grew up consuming American media. The split has become its own battleground, with longtime ARMY members admitting the clip made them cringe while others insisted the outrage is being manufactured from an innocuous phrase.
Not the First Recent Controversy
This isn’t the first time this year RM has drawn scrutiny. He recently stirred further reactions after addressing allegations of xenophobia against him, a response that only deepened the discourse rather than settling it. With each resurfacing moment, the conversation around the BTS leader’s past remarks keeps getting re-litigated by a fandom that treats his every word as a referendum.
For now, the decade-old “Play your own race” exchange remains the internet’s latest obsession — proof that in the K-pop discourse economy, no clip ever truly dies. It just waits for the algorithm to resurrect it.
