Xbox Reveals Cloud Playtime Pricing: Stream Games Without Game Pass Starting at $3.99

Xbox Insiders can now stream games without a Game Pass subscription — and Microsoft has finally revealed what it costs. Starting October 21, Insiders without active Game Pass can buy cloud playtime packs and stream on supported devices, ahead of a broader rollout in November.

This is the pay-as-you-go half of the big Xbox Cloud Gaming overhaul Microsoft announced last month. Where subscribers get a monthly allowance of cloud hours (15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium starting in November), purchased packs work differently: the hours never expire. No monthly reset — unused playtime just sits on your account until you burn it.

The Introductory Pricing

During the Insider preview, cloud playtime is available at introductory launch pricing: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99. That works out to about $0.40 per hour on the small pack and roughly $0.24 per hour on the big one. Microsoft says the packs include an ad-free cloud gaming experience, shorter wait times and high-quality streaming.

One catch: the packs don’t include games. You still need to own a cloud-playable game or have free-to-play access to select titles. And pricing, purchasing options and eligible games may vary by market, device and Insider ring.

Three Tiers of Cloud Gaming

The paid packs join a second Insider option: free, ad-supported cloud gaming, tested since July, which limits sessions to one hour with an ad block before each one. For occasional streamers, a $3.99 pack that never expires could easily beat keeping a subscription — and with GTA VI landing soon, Microsoft is clearly betting on players wanting to stream without committing monthly.
