Canva has unveiled Canva Craft, its first in-house AI image model — and the twist is that it does not think like a photo generator. Craft was built for marketers, creators and designers who need images that work as designs, not just pictures, with editable layers, legible text and precise composition out of the box.
The tagline says it all: “Turn prompts into design-ready images you can edit.” Craft is live in Canva today, and it is also available via API for developers who want to bake design-first image generation into their own products.
Canva Craft: An AI Image Model Trained on Designs, Not Just Photos
Most image models are trained primarily on photos and render pixels straight from a prompt. Craft takes a different route: it learned from millions of Canva templates, plans the composition first, and only then renders — at 2K resolution in 30+ aspect ratios. The result, per the launch details, is legible text in 55 languages, precise placement of elements, and outputs you can split into editable layers to tweak like any other Canva design.
That last point is the real differentiator. A beautiful AI image with garbled text or uneditable elements is a dead end for a designer. Craft aims to generate starting points that drop straight into a workflow — change the headline, move the logo, resize for Instagram — without rebuilding from scratch.
Who Canva Craft Is For
The target is clear: marketers racing to ship campaign creatives, creators thumbnailing videos, and designers who want concept drafts in seconds. No pricing or plan details were disclosed in the launch listing, so availability will depend on Canva’s own tiers — but the API launch signals Canva wants Craft living inside third-party tools too.
If you have ever prompted an image generator, loved the result, and then cursed at the mangled text in it, Canva Craft is aiming squarely at that frustration.
