Leaving the Technical Area? Arteta Has the Receipts

Wandering Premier League managers, beware: Mikel Arteta has the receipts. The Arsenal boss has revealed he is building a dossier of evidence showing other top-flight managers stray outside their technical areas far more than he does — and escape punishment for it.

Arteta picked up his second yellow card of the season for leaving his technical area during Arsenal’s victory over Everton on Saturday. But rather than accept the reputation, he hit back with numbers — and a warning.

Mikel Arteta’s Technical Area Dossier: 36 Times in 10 Minutes

“I do have to be careful. They should put sensors there,” Arteta said. “There are managers who have the record in the league, 36 times in 10 minutes [they] leave the touchline — no yellows.”

“I am clipping all of that so I have now a massive storage of images, so if somebody comes to me I can say, ‘I am not in the record yet’. Somebody else has the record so let’s see.”

Arteta even joked about the logical conclusion of consistent enforcement: “Then it’s 36 yellow cards in 10 minutes for the managers. I don’t know what we are going to do — let’s see.”

Who Is the Mystery Manager Arteta Is Tracking?

Arteta did not name the manager holding his supposed record. But a BBC Sport study from April 2025 offers a clue: of the current top-flight bosses, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery spent the most time outside his technical area. Could he be the culprit?

For now, that is speculation — Arteta is keeping his evidence close to his chest. But the message to his fellow managers is clear: every step outside the technical area is being clipped, stored and filed away. The Arsenal boss has developed a reputation for straying from his zone in recent years, but he insists he is far from the worst offender — and now he says he can prove it.

Until the dossier is revealed, Premier League bosses would do well to watch their step. Arteta is watching.
