Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, has made a surprise cameo in a brand-new animated short from My Chemical Romance. The 7-and-a-half-minute film, titled Prelude to The End, dropped as a surprise yesterday evening just in time for Halloween weekend.

Prelude to The End: A Stop-Motion Dark Fairytale
The short is a stop-motion dark fairytale directed by Lauren Tsai and based on her work The Dying World. It doubles as a 20th anniversary music video for My Chemical Romance’s “The End.” — the opening track of the New Jersey band’s seminal record The Black Parade.
Alongside Kojima, the credits feature Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish, marking the project’s star-studded voice lineup.
Kojima’s Role as ‘The Teacher’
Kojima is credited simply as The Teacher. He appears in a voicemail sequence as the main character, Astrid, retreats to her room to check missed calls. His message scolds her about late homework: “Astrid your Japanese homework is late again. This is unacceptab-” — cut off before the recording ends.
Kojima is no stranger to cameos. The Metal Gear Solid series features several moments where he broke the fourth wall, and he previously appeared in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, a role he recently reprised in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. But a My Chemical Romance music video debut is a fresh twist even by his standards.
