The Australia Jillaroos re-wrote the record books on November 1, hammering Wales 124-6 in the Rugby League World Cup in Sydney — the biggest score in international rugby league history. The Jillaroos, chasing a fourth successive world title, led 60-0 at half time — the largest half-time margin in any World Cup match, men’s or women’s — and kept their foot down after the restart. Wing Jaime Chapman’s sixth try in the final minute took Australia past the previous record, set by Denmark’s men in a 122-8 win over Sweden in 2012.
Australia vs Wales 124-6: Record-Breaking Stats
Chapman’s double-hat-trick equalled the record for most tries in a game for the Jillaroos. Jess Sergis crossed for four tries, while Keilee Joseph, Abbi Church and Tamika Upton all bagged doubles. Both Sergis and Chapman ran for 241 metres apiece — more than the entire Wales team combined (215).
Five-eighth Jesse Southwell produced a masterclass on her return to the starting side: one try, six try assists, and 20 conversions from 21 attempts — 44 individual points, a new Jillaroos record. The stats told the story of the first half: Australia held 84 percent of possession, completed 21 of 22 sets, and enjoyed almost 13 minutes with the ball compared with barely two and a half for Wales.
Wales’ One Moment of Joy Before Fiji Semi-Final
Wales, appearing at the tournament for the first time, had one moment to celebrate: Paige Travis pounced on a Tayla Preston grubber in the 59th minute to become the first player to breach the Australian line all tournament. The 118-point victory margin is the largest ever recorded in a women’s international, although France’s men retain the all-time margin record with their 120-0 rout of Serbia in 2003.
The Jillaroos will now face Fiji in the World Cup semi-final next Sunday at Allianz Stadium, where they will be unbackable favourites. After three group matches — Samoa (40-0), England (78-0) and Wales (124-6) — Australia’s aggregate scoreline reads a ridiculous 242-6.
