IndieWire Hires J. Kim Murphy as Film and Media Reporter
IndieWire has hired award-winning journalist Jackson Kim Murphy as its new Film and Media Reporter. Murphy, whose byline is J. Kim Murphy, will be based in Los Angeles and will cover indie studios, emerging filmmakers, content creators, and new and emerging technology. He will report to Editor-in-Chief Brent Lang.
Murphy joins IndieWire from TheWrap, where he served as the publication’s weekend news editor. Previously, he was an associate news editor at Variety, where he was first hired as an editorial intern. At both publications, he covered breaking news in the entertainment industry, developed enterprise reporting and edited other reporters. He has reviewed new releases, reported from film festivals and covered weekly box office grosses. Murphy has also contributed to IGN Entertainment and the Golden Globes.
“I worked with Jackson at Variety for several years and was impressed by the depth of his film knowledge, as well as his writing and reporting skills,” Lang said. “He is a true talent, and I know IndieWire readers will enjoy reading his work. We are excited to welcome him to our team!”
“It is a thrill to be joining IndieWire, a publication that had no small part in shaping my own moviegoing sensibility and has driven me to understand how we get the films that we do,” Murphy said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to contribute here in return, as well as to work under the confident direction of Brent and alongside an incredibly sharp and passionate editorial team.”
Murphy received a Southern California Journalism Award in 2025 for his coverage of HBO’s docuseries “Ren Faire,” directed by Lance Oppenheim. Murphy has also interviewed Steven Soderbergh, Claire Denis, Robert Towne, Charles Burnett, Frederick Wiseman, Jia Zhangke and Paul W.S. Anderson, among many more filmmakers.
Murphy graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor of arts in film and media studies. There, he also served as chief film critic and arts editor for The Daily Californian and worked as a personal assistant to film scholar Linda Williams.

Mark Harmon & Michael Weatherly To Reunite On ‘NCIS: Origins’
A major NCIS reunion has been set for this fall.
Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly‘s franchise characters will meet again after a decade on CBS‘ NCIS: Origins, where Harmon is appearing for a season-long arc. Fans should tune in to the October 20th episode to watch as Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Harmon) returns to NCIS’ D.C. headquarters to enlist the help of new director Tony DiNozzo (Weatherly) after Gibbs was shot by unknown assailants in the Origins Season 3 premiere.
Weatherly’s return to the mothership series was announced back in July, and took place in the Season 24 premiere on October 6.
New episodes of NCIS: Origins air Tuesdays at 10:00 PM ET/PT on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
“When we first see Gibbs in the season premiere, he is still in Alaska with his trusted rescue dog but soon finds that the peace he found there isn’t going to be easy to hold on to. Ghosts from his past are catching up to him, and it may be enough to pull him out of retirement. Over the course of the season, we’ll discover that what’s happening in the present day is directly tied to events that occurred during his ‘90s Camp Pendleton days,” showrunner and executive producer David J. North recently told Deadline about Harmon’s story this season.
When I asked North if we can expect to see any other NCIS legends as part of this mystery or potential crossovers, he teased, “I’d say it’s a definite possibility…”
NCIS: Origins follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) in the early ‘90s, years prior to the events of NCIS, and is narrated by Harmon. It also stars Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez, and Caleb Foote.
NCIS: Origins‘ third season executive producers include North, Mark Harmon, Sean Harmon, Michele Greco, and Eric Christian Olsen. CBS Studios produces the series.

Michael Jackson 1993 Halftime Show Documentary Set For February From Hulu & ESPN
No one knew how to grab and hold an audience like the King of Pop, and his masterclass for the 1993 Super Bowl Halftime Show is the stuff of legend. Now it’s getting the documentary treatment.
Hulu and ESPN said Tuesday that their new doc feature Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl will premiere in February on the respective streamer and cable channel.
Jackson was the world’s biggest star when he took the stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the moment was electric. Spectacle tells the backstory and chronicles the journey to and through his industry-shifting show, featuring never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team, its legacy and how it catapulted the Super Bowl Halftime show into the single biggest spectacle in pop culture.

The NFL’s title game was coming off a pair of big-name halftime headliners in New Kinds on the Block and Gloria Estefan in 1991 and 1992, but Fox played a counterprogramming card against Estefan’s show, airing an In Living Color special at halftime that swiped some 22 million viewers. The NFL hit back in 1993 with Jackson, whose performance began with him standing still for two full minutes, striking an aloof pose in a black suit crisscrossed by what look like gold bullet-belts.
He followed with songs including “Billie Jean,” “Black or White” and others including “We Are the World,” in which more than 3,000 local kids joined in. It marked the first time the second half of the Super Bowl had more viewers than the first and set the new normal of using the halftime show to attract and hold viewers.
Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is a Skydance Sports production, in association with Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Bao Nguyen directs and produces the doc. Producers also include Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports; John Branca for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films. Executive producers are Karen Langford for Optimum Productions and Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy for NFL Films.
